Judy: Nick? Nick, wake up! *Worried, Judy gently shook him awake.*
Nick: *Eyes pop open, a snarl curling his lips, teeth bared, growl rumbling in his throat*
Judy: Nick, calm down its me! *Whispers urgently trying to assure him before he accidentally mistakes her for a threat*
Nick: Judy? *Blinks, almost panting, bewildered.*
Judy: You were having a bad dream...
Nick: *Averts her gaze and rolls over, presenting his back to her.* 'Was nothin'. Go back to sleep, Carrots.
Judy: *Places paw on his shoulder* It wasn't nothing, Nick... Talk to me... Please?
Nick: ...
Judy: Was it something from you past?
Nick: ...
Judy: ...
Nick: ... Yeah.
Judy: You know... You can tell me. I won't tell a soul.
Nick: *Sighs, slowly rolling over to face her, praying its dark enough in the room to hide the shame on his face* Do you remember that story I told you? After we left Chief Bogo and the other cops back in the Jungle District?
Judy: *Swallows thickly, nodding.*
Nick: Sometimes... I dream about it... But I'm not a kid anymore when I do. I'm... Me - like I am now. Muzzled and caged. Treated like a... Like a -
Judy: Like a savage?
Nick: *He flinched, but was grateful she didn't liken his vulpine nature to 'animal' or anything like unto it.* Yeah...
Judy: *Reaching out, she gently wrapped her arms around him, cradling his head towards her chest.* You're not a savage Nick, and you're not some thing that needs to be muzzled and caged...
Nick: *Taken off guard, he froze, unmoving.*
Judy: *Hoping to assure him, she held on a little tighter, gently running her digits through his soft, warm fur.* You're not any of those things. *She whispered.*
Nick: Then what am I?
Judy: ... You're mine. *She whispered simply, as if it was the most honest, obvious, answer in the universe.*
Nick: *Stricken by two, simple little words, the fox tentatively, slowly, wound his arms around the precious figure who held him, and pulled her closer, saying nothing.*
Judy: *Presses a chaste kiss to the top of his head*
Hold on to me... Everything is going to be okay...

Nick is still haunted by the muzzle incident from when he was smaller.
Part of him believes he could go savage if something like the Night Howler incident ever happened again.
Part of him is terrified he will hurt Judy.
But the biggest part of him is scared of what could happen to Judy if he can't protect her.
On a more personal note, I know there's a few of us out there who knows what its like to be in Nick's paws...
If you are, just hang in there. Know that dawn is always coming, the sun is always rising, and there's always a new day to start again, and there's always someone out there willing to listen, help, and be that shoulder to cry on.

Your right that the dawn comes eventually but it's always darkest before dawn and sometimes the darkness is so thick it's with us forever. That's when you need someone to hold on to so we don't drown in the mire and that person that we find who holds us is our dawn. It's nice to see that Judy is Nick's guardian angel. You tend to think of Nick being taller to be more the one to offer support more then Judy but seeing Nick so vulnerable makes me feel sorry for him.

I never got a chance to see it posted here, but now that I know the story behind it, it's that much more heartbreaking.
I can honestly see Nick suffering from PTSD this way and Judy comforting him. And the way she handles things is perfect, she'd protect him no matter what.

I could totally see this happening. Judy has to be a very strong woman both physically and mentally to excel in her training the way she did despite setbacks, and physical pain and humiliation. That girl has strength to spare.
