I like how the toaster slots resemble the black keys on a piano. when I saw this in the thumbnail, I imagined the slices of toast playing musical notes as they pop up. very nice pic.

Not strange at all, actually. I'm completely aware of the musical qualities of this piece. The pieces of toast feel like musical notes and the toaster slots are almost like minor keys... I'm glad you like it!

Wow! Too complimentary!!! Ah, yes, the ill-fated, ever-present pencil marks!--I had a different composition originally, but then I impulsively changed my mind and decided to go with my original super-simple sketch composition. In my frustration with the original drawing, I apparently drove the pencil a bit too deeply for the pastel to cover (but I tried anyway). In the end, I'm totally okay with them there as I just consider this a sketch piece and part of me feels that they somehow contribute to the overall looseness I was going for. I guess I could get rid of them in photoshop...

Crazily enough, they make toasters with almost as many slots as the one I drew!!! I actually determined how long mine would be by checking for the biggest I could find on google and adding a couple more slots. Once the number exceeds 10 or 12, all that's available is conveyer belt toasters, which are cool, but they just aren't the same without the neat popping noise/action!
