Description I've rarely seen pictures of the underside of spiders and this one was particularly huge.. so there you have it, my impetus for the shot. It is sitting outside one of the windows of the house on a huge orb web (orb spider maybe?). So to orient yourself around this.. I had to stand on two old tires.. balance.. because I shot at ISO 50 and wanted to avoid camera shake. I had to take into consideration I was shooting with a window in the background so there was reflection from the house next door and of course reflection of light to consider. I then had to get the beast in focus but not scare it and miraculously keep my own silly reflection out of the shot.

I got one shot before it freaked out and ran to it's corner and this is it. Luck luck luck.

I've left the picture almost it's full size so you can enjoy the minute details, however if you've been to my gallery before, you will recall I have an army of spiders living around me. So if you rip my spider, I will call upon the arachnid army to eat your brains when you sleep.

Enjoy.

We have a great shot of the underbelly of a-what seems to be a female orb spider (not sure, though, even after a whole day of research)- spider. I believe this is a very good shot, that really brings out the main focus of the image, and that is the spider before anything else.

What drew me after the spider was it's back-left leg. There seems to be electricity/lighting coming out of it. It might be just a reflection combined with the web, but it makes the spider look so... super. A super spider, though, it cannot be the one that bit a certain Peter Parker.

Overall, a truly magnificent image that brings out very minute detail of the main focus. The placement of the spider and timing are proof of the skill and patience it must have took to capture the moment without ruining it (i.e the spider running off).

Thumbs up; keep up the great work e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="391" title=" (Smile)"/>

oh btw, wolf spiders don't make webs, they're called wolf spiders apparently because they ambush their prey on land, somewhat similar to wolves ^^ and wolf spiders abdomens are not big. xD

I get these spiders every summer, and as you said in your comment they are Orb Spiders. They're usually easy to identify because of their colour, but mainly because of the sword shape on the top of the abdomen. And if it helps, the spider is a female as the males are usually about a centimeter and the females are usually 2 centimeters or larger.
I love this photo though, I've been trying to take pictures of them put my camera is rubbish lol.
I want to be this good!

Gah. It took some coaxing to get my hand to click on this thumbnail. I'm not very fond of spiders... i'm facinated by the buggers though. Especially the fat round ones that build those enormous webs on the side of one's house. I've had a couple in Texas and New Mexico. It's just too hot out here in Arizona for them. They'd roast and then i'd have to go knock them down and more than likely get wrapped up in their web then we'd all have a shrieking and flailing Jenn on our hands. I'm such a girl.

I had a point to this.

Anyway, i've always wanted to get a shot of one of them like this. I had a chance to a few years ago but my ex-stepdad came out the front door just as I was setting my camera up for the shot and scared the spider to move in my direction. I freaked out, fell off the bits of wood I was standing on and landed in my ma's flowerbed. So yeah, I didn't get the shot.

I absolutely LOVE this one. It's hard for me to look at because they weird me out so much but I can certainly appreciate the odd beauty these guys have. Wonderful capture!

whoahh! i like the compo. i like spiders as well. Here in the philippines, we have season where kids collect different kinds of spiders. And put on matchbox-like with lots of sections. (sorry for my english) anyway, who cares. Lol. Really nice photo, and colors too.

I wanted to ask you a lot of questions but i don't want to make your work a lot heavier..
