We are so lucky to attract smiles from lots of animals I consider it something of a compliment myself when a Reptile starts flicking its tongue at me, trying to get a sense and smell of me.

It happened a lot that day Maybe because we'd spent the morning in a cat café...

Species: Asian Water Monitor (Indische varaan)

Latin name: Varanus Salvator

Originates from South and Southeast Asia.

Current status: Least Concern

…This Asian Water Monitor has many other names: Sri Lanka Water Monitor, Two-Banded Monitor, Rice Lizard, Ring Lizard, Plain Lizard, No-Mark Lizard and simply Water Monitor.

…It is a large species of Water Monitor, which attains breeding maturity when they’re still relatively modest in size, but will grow much larger yet during their life.

…They are the world’s second-heaviest Lizard, ranking right after the Komodo Dragon.

…The Asian Water Monitor is an excellent swimmer, using the raised fin on their tail to steer through the water.

…Though they are ferocious predators, when they’re still rather small themselves, they are the prey. They will climb trees to escape other predators, and have been known to jump from trees into streams of water for safety.

…It is one of the most exploited species of Varanids, traded globally, it’s skin used to create fashion accessories, a perceived remedy for skin ailments, a novelty food and an exotic pet.
