I like the rough, unfinished aspect to this piece.

I think your texture is working brilliantly with hair and the hand. It seems to be less effective on the back of the right arm. Its reminding me of a tree trunk. I think a little more of the paper texture would take care of it though.
p.s. I absolutely love your work.

Well, this was only and hour drawing, heh. More of a study of applying charcoal than a finished piece. I do, however, see your point. The arm is rather lacking.

Beautiful work. The details on the face are really nice, but I kind of like the way it fades out to less tight imagery. It really draws attention to where you did detail.

I'm really trying to play with that more. I always think it's interesting when an image isn't treated the same everywhere, but I always end up treating all parts the same :/

you have mentioned in some of your earlier comments that you start messy, and then neaten it up. do you always follow this technique? is there any other?
i am just curious because i have been trying to work like you do,which works at times, but fails when attempted with acrylics.
any suggestions?

I cant really offer any help when it comes to painting. Starting messy works for me with the tools I use, but I dont paint.
