When the war began we had to relearn an ancient truth. That fire - man’s oldest weapon against the darkness - casts great and terrible shadows.

AKA - Petty Officer Kozmotis Pitchiner becomes a war hero because he is A. Good at killing Fearlings and B. Really good at not getting killed by Fearlings(i mean…for awhile)

When he tells this story to Seraphina he leaves out the part where half the crew got possessed and they ended up killing as many humans as shadows. Hence the bloody sword.

BOOK STUFF because the Golden Age and the great war are basically my favorite part of the Guardians of Childhood mythos.
