My god did Zuko stink in that episode. I mean, I know he fought toe to toe with Zhao in the next one, but MAN. He was just SUCKING.
Edit: To people saying no one had fought an airbender in years so it's excusable...I present to you Aang's fight with Jet, a non-bender, which Jet won.

Well Ozai is one of the most skilled and the most powerfull fire benders that ever existed! Also Aang didn't want to kill Ozai, because he still followed the Air Nomad rules by not killing people! When Aang was in his Avatar state he was in control of that state and Aang took away Ozai's bending, not his soul, because elements in the world of Avatar are just powers, they don't really effect the human brain or their blood presure!

Oh, I love that episode, at least the Norwegian dub when the two first meet:
"You're the Avatar? You're nothing but a child."
"And you're a grumpy teenager." So funny from a kid's perspective.
Zuko sucked in that episode, but if we talk about his growth through the first three seasons, he might be the second strongest character in the original series.

Writers could never figure out exactly how strong they wanted Zuko to be. So be bounced around from getting beaten up by a twelve year old to matching an angry, well trained avatar.

Good point! Though Jet did have an environmental advantage with those trees. He was used to moving around them, so they let him get up on Aang's level (while they just sort of got in Aang's way).
Zuko was in a small room, and Aang was smart to throw something unexpected and large. There just wasn't much space to dodge.

It's due to the sexyfine effect. Badassery increases proportional to the rising attractiveness of the character in question. Examples: Zuko's transformation in Book 2 and 3. Azula with her hair hanging down during The Southern Raiders, Jet. The only exception to this rule is Iroh.
