Well, the story 'the Speckled Band' doesn't make a heck of a lot of sense from a biological point of view-- snakes are deaf and don't like milk. So, OBVIOUSLY, Dr. Roylott was really keeping a poisonous baby dragon, which Watson disguised as a snake because it would kinda ruin his credibility if he talked about dragons. It's not deaf because it's a dragon, not a snake. It likes milk because it's a baby. Since only baby mammals drink milk, I made its back slightly furry, so it's a mammal. And it has the bell rope because it can't really fly yet. And, of course, it's speckled. Therefore, this is what really happened. QED....This here was another case of BSing non-fantasy fandoms onto Elfwood

I think "snake" was a typo and it was supposed to be "skink," a kind of lizards (lizards can hear and can have deadly venom).

Ohh, NOW I understand. Yeah, that makes much more sense. And maybe the baboon really WAS a hairy deformed child, which would explain why Watson wondered what it was when he already knew Roylot had a baboon.
