Working on hard surface modeling in Blender, I made this Spinner...inspired by Blade Runner 2049.

I have always loved the Blade Runner movie(s) and especially the visionary work of illustrator/production designer Syd Mead...I guess that one could argue that these movies along with the Star Wars series movies made possible modern Scifi.

Many of the scenes in both BR movies were shot at night and I wanted my picture to feel at once grungy and mysterious so, a night time scene makes sense I think...but, really this picture is more about practice in taking a complex shape like the BR spinner and simplifying it into basic shapes.

Up until now in Blender, I have been hesitant to begin a serious hard surface modeling discipline...while I have done a fair share of 3D modeling, I have found HS in Blender unapproachable with its studied precise shapes and many tools and operations. However, I have recently discovered the Hard Ops, Box Cutter and MACHIN3tools addons along with lots of tutorials online to support them. These addons make the work much faster and much more enjoyable than the out of the box 'vanilla' Blender and I have found myself spending many rewarding hours at the computer in my attempts to learn their workflow.

Diving right in and pushing past my fear has given me more confidence and so Blender is less a source of intimidation and frustration...but rather a source of fascination and just plain fun.
