Amazing; it almost looks like a photograph. I really like all the detail put into each strand of hair.
I have practiced a couple of times making portraits (using a similar style), but none came out like... THIS!

The word you're looking for is tortillon or smudge stick. Basically just finely rolled up paper used for shading.
The portrait looks great, the only thing that looks off to me is the eyes which seem too bold in relation to the rest of the portrait, but you said you didn't have time to add more contrast so this is understandable. Again, great work for a first portrait! I couldn't do as good of shading on the face without a tortillon, so props!
