Description Look what I painted! Yeah, it's been a while, but I finally worked up the nerve to attempt painting this piece.

I will be taking (and submitting) more photos of this sculpture tomorrow, but I like this one from my otherwise unsuccessful photo shoot tonight, so I thought I'd post it up.

More to come!

For now, this is my Black Rabbit sculpture, inspired by Watership Down, made of super sculpey firm over a wire/wire mesh armature and painted with acrylics.

I love this, it's so cool. And watership down is my favorite movie, I always draw rabbits influenced off of it now. Great job on the tiny skull by the way!

I love you big creepy bunny so much! It reminds me of Donnie Darko, and also Watership Down (as you mentioned). Awesomeness. Can't wait to see a more full view of this sculpture all painted! <3 You are, as always, extraordinarily gifted when it comes to musculature and expressive posture. Rock on!

Yes, it's a fantastic book. I haven't read it as many times as you, but just re-read it recently and it was every bit as good as I remember it being.

HORRIBLE! It's fantastic! I thought of "Watership Down" the moment I saw the thumbnail.

I love the composition of the photo, but maybe include the little rabbit's feet in one of them? He doesn't like to be cropped.

rgyoung In reply to silverwing1979 [2009-01-18 07:28:48 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!

Hahaha, I don't normally take "Horrible" as a compliment, but maybe I should for pieces like this guy, eh?

I'm glad you like the photo--there are more shots of the piece in my gallery if you're interested. Little bunny was spared further foot cropping in them.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

silverwing1979 In reply to rgyoung [2009-01-18 15:03:58 +0000 UTC]

Oh yes, you should! Watership Down scarred me for life when I was little - even when I finally read the book at age 13 or 14, I had the skip the whole chapter about General Woundwort. So in making your sculpture this creepy, you've captured the essence of the story as far as I'm concerned!

Though I know the Black Rabbit isn't necessarily evil, if I recall correctly... more misunderstood or misjudged. But the rabbits are often afraid of him, understandably, and you've captured that so perfectly. He's holding the little rabbit quite gently, but there's still a sense of menace and foreboding about the piece. In short: bravo!!

I did look at all the other pics after posting that message, and actually I do like the cropping too, both with & without the feet.

Thank you! Lots of credit is due to Mr. Adams--that novel is so rich with strange, haunting imagery that stuck with me. Definitely inspiring.

The novel was the first "real" book I read--the first with no pictures. I was astounded by its beauty then (at 9 or 10), and just as astounded when I re-read it recently.
