Description Graphite on paper, approx. 11x17in.

This one's kind of tame for me, as I'm used to doing drawings with a slightly weird/creepy angle to them. As the title states, this drawing was based on a sketch by daVinci. It was of an angel for one of his paintings if I remember correctly. I liked the angle of the turned head and that kind of beatific gaze that Leonardo seemed to render so well. Well, I didn't quite get it right. The nose is kinda wonky. I never manage to see my mistakes until weeks, months or even years after I've finished a drawing. But other than that I think it's an okay piece, if not one I'd boast about all that much.

EDITED 1/6/05 Added a border and made the watermark more transparent.

You've got great control of shade, especially around your patterns like the whole background image and the bandana. Of course the face is great as well. The eyes look so distant and funky.

Glad you like it! The face drives me nuts every time I look at it, but I'm happy to know people are getting enjoyment out of the drawing nevertheless. Thanks!

I think I'm gonna have to force myself not to give every character I draw dreadlocks now. They're highly addictive.

I always thought those "beatific" looks were looks of constipation. LOL This is gorgeous work. I love the face. Although, I see you have the same problem with the lips at this angle that I do. The trick is to visualize their three dimensional shape as well as thier placement. Sometimes they look like they go right off the edge of the face.

rho-cass In reply to NCWeber [2004-11-22 23:29:13 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, it was a kind of difficult. I've gotten a lot better with that particular angle, though, and I can visualize it easily now. That's not to say I've completely mastered drawing the human face; I still have problems setting the distance between the eyes, the length of the nose, etc.

wow...you are so awesome...evertime I look at any of your stuff I stare in awe...just everything is so perfect. I am also obsessed with your usage of textures, because you really don't see a lot of that I think, and even though they are different textures within a single piece, they don't clash. They just kind of give way to each other in a nice flow...and I look at some of the stuff I did not even two months ago and cringe...so don't feel too bad about yourself...you are awesome.

Oh, don't get me started on "artist's regret." My older drawings and sketchbooks are one big cringe from beginning to end. I swore I was TEH AWSUM!!1! And that was just last year . . .

The only past drawings I look back on with any fondness are my really old drawings from when I was a little preteen Lisa Frank addict, brandishing my Crayola markers. And they're only good in the context that I didn't know any better back then.

I've always deplored Lisa Frank, and I think your work doesn't show any influence of her at all! I'm surprised you list her as one of your early muses!

When I was a kid, yeah, I loved that stuff. What little girl wouldn't be attracted to all those sparkles and retina-burning Super Happy Pretty Rainbow Funtime colors? It's crack for teenies, I tell you! I still look back on it with fondness as a piece of childhood nostalgia, even though looking at her stuff fifteen years later makes my bowels bleed.

Your attention to detail is quite amazing. Apart from her eyes, the decorative symbols are fantastic and don't look at all like rendering. My goodness...

femjesse [2004-11-05 04:45:45 +0000 UTC]

This is very beautiful. I don't think the angle makes her weird or creepy. I think that she is seductive and pure at the same time. She has an African and Christian haloed presence and its beautiful and cultural and divine. I don't think the nose is wonky at all, I see wonkier noses on real people on a daily basis. I feel that the lips are either off-kilter or pursed. I feel that the pursed-ness also contributes to her seductiveness.

I like the seductiveness angle. I sort of had that in mind along with the connection to daVinci's sketch when I named the drawing. Perhaps her Leonardo is the guy who put that smile on her face.
