Well I have self-published pretty much everything, and to make a PDF you need a PDF-making program like Adobe Indesign (Although I'm certain there's cheaper options somewhere that are just as good). I think you can do it in Word but I wouldn't recommend it.

Well they have a bunch of quality requirements that take time to learn but I don't think they care much in particular about content so not really?
