How close I am to nature is one of my favourite things about this place! In summer my balcony is surrounded and protected by lots of little trees, bushes and leaves, which turn wonderfully colourful during autumn, and in winter I get a wide view over the city lights.
Living on a hill is not so untypical for Stuttgart, since it was built into a caldera (don't know if that's the right word for it, we call it "Kessel" in German, which directly translates to kettle). We have lots of hills here that are full of vineyards, and so as soon as you leave the city you have a pretty decent view. The house I live in is not so special, though, for it is quite old. But I do think it is located in a special place, since it is the end of the street and I not only have a great view over the city from my window, but also nature nearby.

I am almost all the way in the South of Germany, and usually we do get snow during the winter. But we haven't had our first one yet, and last year it held off completely. But the winter of 2010 was a beautiful one, I have some film photos of it here, that were taken near my family's home: ronasfilmdiary.tumblr.com/post…

Thank you so much! I do try to plan my self-portraits, and since I'll have to focus on something else I need to know where I am going to stand. Usually I just take a few shots and look at them on the camera, and then it evolves from there — and I adapt my location, pose, the camera perspective etc. until I am satisfied. (:

That makes a beautiful view for yourself. Glad you're there and have the opportunity to observe such great scenery!

I took a peak into the Duden dictionary, and my German classes paid off: while the direct translation is, indeed, "kettle", it also means territory downhill of a mountain (I don't suppose you call a hill "ein Berg"), which seems to correspond to either "caldera" or "basin" (the latter being an option which die Deutsche Wikipedia gives us when linking to its English sister).

The house being old makes it quite special, don't you think? Even more so when I see how beautiful it is even from the inside: if it is in such great condition, it is very different from the old houses I'm used to. I'd love to visit such place, even if just for a few hours.

It's always mesmerizing to look at how an artist is making their work. I'm astounished by painters and photographers since I'm neither, as well as the products of such artists feel much more real than of digital artists because it's made by hands. I'm ready to bet that I'd be equally mesmerized by the process of taking that photograph.

One more question, not regarding the picture: do you speak more German, more English or equally of both languages in your day-to-day life?

I am only going to stay here for another two or three months, but I have been treasuring every little moment about this place.
And I do like old houses, this one is just not the prettiest one in comparison to what we call "Altbau" and what I would love to live in! In the best case they have beautiful wooden floor and huge ceilings in them. So while I love so much about this place, I must admit that the age of the house really shows in various places. But I don't mind too much!

We actually do call hills "Berg"!

I speak German all day in real life, and mostly write English on the internet. I do have quite a few English speaking friends, but I don't get to see them very often. So my mother tongue is German, but I really love the English language.

I am happy you seem to like my work, and that you are so interested in it!

As a related question to you speaking German: do you have any accent speaking English? It is always interesting for me to hear about accents and accents themselves: there's something magical in that, making one language appear within another. 

"seem to" in your last sentence is quite an unnecessary bit of uncertainty. Keep up the good work!

I think I might have a slight accent when speaking English, but I keep being told that it is rather British than anything else. I improved my English a lot when spending five months in France, where I had many British friends, and so I kind of adopted their accent that I already loved so much. I just really didn't want to have any German accent when speaking English, for it drives me crazy, so I guess British works for me.

You didn't want to sound excessively as a stereotypical German, I presume?

I want you to think about this. You've obtained a British way of speaking English while being in France from Germany. Doesn't that strike you as a marvellous example of how free to traverse our world is, and how great is it that we can find friends from different countries that even two hundred years ago were unaccessible to a general person?

Exactly!

I always found it quite funny that I improved my English more than my French when staying in France.
And yes, I really do appreciate the fact that in our age it is so easy to travel and even live abroad for a while!
