I do the first sketches, usually lots of erase marks and wispy lines and what not, and then I trace my own sketch with more precise lines for a clean finish

I put a piece of paper over my other piece and use a pen or pencil. If you mean how do you see the paper underneath, you can hold both pieces up to a window if you don't have a light table
