Description A Work Of Artifice
Marge Piercy

The bonsai tree
in the attractive pot
could have grown eighty feet tall
on the side of a mountain
till split by lightning.
But a gardener
carefully pruned it.
It is nine inches high.
Every day as he
whittles back the branches
the gardener croons,
It is your nature
to be small and cozy,
domestic and weak;
how lucky, little tree,
to have a pot to grow in.
With living creatures
one must begin very early
to dwarf their growth:
the bound feet,
the crippled brain,
the hair in curlers,
the hands you
love to touch.

some bonsai are just bonsai. and some pots are illusory. the gardener only exists as a reminder that every tree has a choice.

You've portrayed a great expression through this. Very real.

Absolutely nice
I comment a lot today, i tend to write too much things like that, but i like this piece a lot anyway... It's totally out of time, and it means a lot... It's a really really good one, the subject is mastered !

o wow. i just adore this piece. the words on the painting....it's so cryptic.......erm, cracked my head up a little.
"ai ming nu, chu he fu gui ai"
does it have to do with women slavery? in the sense of women conforming to public's opinion. the words sounds like some operatic song sang in traditional opera. i just love it.

Oh....Uhhh wait I think this poem is refreshing because of... "women and the mutilation in which we put ourselves through in order to appeal to a certain ideal"....ha ha ....Sorry this is either way still a beautiful piece

Now I can see it. The feeling of pressure in the piece, not just compositionally but the direction of/expression on the face, is very nicely done.

I love that poem. But it's not letting me see the picture so I'll be back.

Hear about the controversial decision a Boston high school made to have a Vagina Monologues performance?
