Description The night was silent except for a few night birds and crickets.  The moon was high in the night sky and full as its beams shimmered on the lake in the forested valley.  Walking alongside that lake was a beautiful dragoness.  She had light blue scales with purple stripes down her legs and back.  She had darker blue horns with the tips of her wings being purple.  She also had a spear at the end of her tail the same dark blue as her horns.  Her name was Sassy.  Walking along the lake at night was one of the things she loved to do enjoying the beauty of the moon and stars as they were reflected on the water.  This night as she was walking along, she suddenly heard something.  Turning her head she saw something moving on the other side of the lake.  It appeared to be a young dragon about her size and age.  Listening she thought she heard grunts of pain coming from this young male dragon.  She hurried toward him to help.  When she got near him, she could see he was covered with claw marks, bruises and gashes where he had been wounded.   As she approached, he looked up at her with a loud grunt of pain and collapsed to the ground.
She was now standing next to him.  She could see that he was unconscious and losing blood fast.  Thinking fast, she picked him up and carried him back to her home cave.  He was heavy but an adrenalin rush seemed to give her the strength.  When she got to her cave home, he began to moan as he came to.  She laid him down next to the wall of the cave and began to gather some clean rags and ointment to apply and bind up his wounds.  He continued to come to as she worked.
Groggily he asked, “Where am I?”  Then seeing Sassy he asked, “Who are you?”
As she worked on his wounds, she answered, “My name is Sassy and you are at my home.  I took you here when I saw you fall unconscious at the lake.”
“Sassy,  huh?  What a cute name.  My name is Das,” but as he spoke, he began to fade back into unconsciousness.   She continued to work on his wounds.  When she finished, she took a good look at him.  He was mostly black but with yellow plated scales running along his underside and beneath his wings.  He had two yellow horns with a line of brown spikes on top of his head.  He had yellow claws and large brown spikes at the tip of his tail.  Across his eyes, he had a brown stripe.  He also had some old scars:  a claw mark across his cheek and other larger claw marks on both his shoulder and on his side.   She kept wondering what he was doing at the lake and how he got hurt.  She continued to look after Das until he woke up the next morning.   He awoke moaning with pain.  He attempted to stand up but fell back with the pain.  He opened his eyes to see Sassy and asked, “What happened?”
She attempted to answer him but he quickly slipped back into unconsciousness.  She began to change the bandages on his wounds and noticed a large older scar on his neck.  It appeared to be made by a large claw probably of another dragon.  As she was finishing dressing his wounds afresh, he began to stir back to consciousness.  “Das,” she said with concern.
In a low voice, he muttered, “water..”
Sassy quickly went deeper into the cave and returned with a large glass of water from a stream that flowed there.  She sat it down beside him and he sat up, taking the glass and drinking from slowly.  When he finished drinking she asked, “How are you feeling Das?”
      “I’m feeling better, thank you.”
      “You’re welcome,” replied Sassy.
Then Das asked, “Where am I?”
“You’re at my home, remember?” Sassy asked surprised.
Das looked around and said, “Oh, now I remember.”
Then he looked at Sassy and asked, “Why did you help me, a stranger?”
Sassy said, “You needed help and there was no one else to help.”
He looked the other way and said, “Thank you.”
“You’re welcome.  After all I don’t get many visitors. Why were you at the lake anyway?”
Then with a heavy sigh he said, “I don’t remember anything actually before last night.”
“You don’t remember anything?” she said.
      He nodded yes.
      “You only remember your name?”
      He nodded yes again.
Then thinking for a moment, she said, “Why don’t you stay here until your memory comes back.”
He looked at her with surprise at her offer.
Then she added, “Also, I don’t want you getting killed by whoever attacked you last night if you go out there alone.”
He looked the other way and then looked back saying, “thank you”--as he didn’t know what else to say.  Sassy smiled at him and told him to rest.  “It’s going to be a long time before you get back on your legs again.”
He nodded and laid back down at the back corner of the cave.  As he rested, Sassy could not help but stare at his scars and wounds.  Whatever had attacked him apparently wanted to kill him.  The next morning, Das was asleep while Sassy was out hunting for food.  While she was foraging, she heard some twigs snap and quickly hid behind some large trees.  Then she saw two large black dragons looking down on the ground before them.  It looked to her as if they were tracking something or someone.
She overheard them talking.  She leaned closer without making a sound to hear better.  “We know he went this way.  Keep looking, he has to be around here somewhere,” said one dragon to the other.  “Yeah and if we don’t find Das soon and kill him, the boss is going to kill us.”
After hearing what they had said, she quietly got out from behind the trees and flew back to her cave.  Meanwhile Das had awoken and was looking around curious about Sassy’s cave.  Then he decided to go outside for some fresh air.  Before he got out, he noticed a picture of a red dragon that looked like the same age as Sassy.  As he looked at the red dragon, he wondered who he was and how important to Sassy since she had his picture there.  Then he thought he would ask Sassy about the picture when she returned.  Then he heard footsteps approaching and assumed a battle stance.  Then he realized it was Sassy.
She came in frantic saying, “We’ve got to hide now.  I came across two black dragons that were tracking you and talking about killing you.”
Surprised Das said, “What? But why?”
“I don’t know.  They didn’t know I was there.  But I don’t want to risk them finding you here. “
“Hmm,” Das wasn’t sure what to do. He didn’t remember anything including his combat tactics. Then they heard wings flapping and someone saying, “He has to be here somewhere.”
Sassy quickly took Das to a room hidden in the back of the cave.  They hear the black dragons talking to each other.  Sassy and Das kept quiet, hearing them throw everything out of place.
Listening carefully they heard the first dragon say, “If we don’t find him and kill him soon, boss going to brake our necks.”
When hearing this,  Das wondered, “‘who are they working for that wants me dead?’
Then they heard the second dragon say, “Shh.. I see something . “
They heard glass breaking and stuff being throw around.  The first dragon said, “He must be here.  I can smell his scent.”
Then the second dragon said, “I don’t think he left.”
      “Oh no,” thought Das.
Then they heard footsteps coming toward them.  They remained quiet but then were alarmed when the boulder at the entrance of their hidden room began to move.   As the dragon started to look behind that boulder, Sassy shot out a blast of fire right into his face blinding him temporarily.  Both Sassy and Das rushed out past that first dragon but the second dragon was blocking their way and tackled Sassy.   Das became enraged at seeing Sassy being tackled and hurt by this dragon and shot a blast of wind at the dragon with such force that he crashed into the wall breaking the bones in his wings.   Seeing the dragon was down, he quickly went to Sassy’s side.
He asked Sassy, “Are you alright?”
Sassy nodded and said she was fine.
Then they saw the dragon that they had temporarily blinded recovering his sight enough to go to his ally’s side and pick him up and carry him outside.  They quickly flew away.
After they were gone, Sassy turned to Das and said, “I didn’t know you had power to create wind.”
“Me neither,” said Das adding, “Maybe I am beginning to remember my abilities.”
Sassy said, “Maybe, most dragons don’t have that kind of power.  It’s rare.”
      Das replied with surprise, “Really?”
      “Yeah,” nodded Sassy.
They both looked around Sassy’s cave and started picking up and fixing things that had got knocked about.
Das said, “I’m sorry for these dragons coming in looking for me and causing all this trouble.”
“Don’t worry, “ Sassy replied, “these things can be fixed and I don’t blame you for it.”
Then Sassy sees the picture of the red dragon lying in broken glass.  She picked the picture up and carried it to her room and set it beside her bed.  Seeing that Sassy was sad when she saw the broken picture Das decided not to ask about the red dragon.  After a few hours of fixing Sassy’s home, it was back to the condition it was in before the attack.  After that, Sassy went back to the water stream that was in her cave and washed her wounds.  They began to heal as she had power to use water for healing.  After a few minutes, she was as good as new.  She returned to the room where Das was looking at some old photos of Sassy when she was younger.
He turned to her and said, “Hey, I was just looking at these pictures of you.  You look nice in them.”
Sassy replied, “Thank you, Das, for helping me restore my home.”
“No problem.  It is the least I could do after you helped me when I was injured.”
Sassy smiled at him, then giggled when she heard his stomach begin to rumble and noticed that he was blushing in embarrassment.   “Hungry?” Sassy asked.
Still blushing, he said, “Yeah, kinda.”
“Good thing I have food in the back of the cave.”
      “Oh, you do?” said Das.
“Yeah, I save some food when I don’t feel like hunting or in the wintertime when it is hard to find some.”
      “Okay, thanks again Sassy.”
As Sassy was getting dinner ready by starting a small campfire to roast some venison, she noticed that Das was looking at her eyes.  He said, “I noticed that your eyes change color.  When I first saw you your eyes were a golden color then later they were pink.  Now they are blue.”
“Well, that’s because they change color with my mood.  It’s a rare condition that I have,” answered Sassy.
“Your eyes are beautiful,” He said with a blush.
Then Sassy blushed and said, “Thank you.”
When the venison was ready, they began to eat.  As they ate, they talked about various topics like Das’s ability to create and control wind.  He was amazed that Sassy knew so much about rare abilities.
After dinner, she checked Das’s wounds and saw they had healed sufficiently to remove the bandages.
“How are you feeling?” she asked.
“I’m starting to feel better,” he answered.  Das looked over at Sassy and thought how beautiful and amazing she was.  Then he noticed that she had no scars from the fight with the black dragons.  He thought to himself that she must be a quick healer.
Then Sassy said, “That’s good.”  Then she noticed that he was staring at her.  “You are wondering why there are no scars, right?”
      “Yea“ he replied shyly.
“Well, I can control water and with that I can heal myself or others with water without leaving any scars.”
“Whoa, that is awesome.  You must be a very powerful dragoness!”
“I do have some powerful abilities but I keep a few secret because I am still practicing to control them.  Also there are evil dragons out there who want to use me for my abilities.  Very few of my friends know about my abilities.”
Then Das said, “I can see why you want to hide them fearing others.  Thank you, Sassy, for everything you have done for me.”
      Sassy said, “You’re welcome.”
They talked a little more and finally Das asked Sassy two questions that had been on his mind.
“Sassy, why do you live by yourself?  Don’t you have anyone?”
Sassy replied, “I did once but he died last year.”
      Das said, “Oh, I’m sorry.”
      “That’s okay.”
Thinking of the picture he had seen earlier, he asked, “Was it that red dragon in the picture?”
Looking sadly at Das, she said, “Yes, his name was Atom.  He was my mate.”  Then she got up and walked to her room.
He took a peek inside the room and saw Sassy was crying on her bed.  Feeling sorry for her, he walked back to the corner of the cave and laid down.  As he drifted into sleep, he thought how losing your mate must be worse than losing your memory.

I like it so far. The only question I have is how they pick things up if they walk on all fours.
Anyways, I enjoyed reading something about dragons. It reminds me I should get back to writing as well.
