Description The Cordillera Real (Royal Range) is the dominating landscape feature of the northern Bolivian Andes. Due to a series of weather phenomena, they are heavily glaciated throughout the year (although the glaciers have been rapidly receding in recent years). The highest peak in the picture is Ancohuma (whose name means "White Water" in the Aymará language), and the peak to the left is Nevado Illampu. Ancohuma is 6,427 meters (21,086 feet) above sea level, whereas the slightly lower Illampu is "only" 6,368 meters (19,862 feet) high, and considered to be the most difficult summit of all mountains in Bolivia over six thousand meters.

I took this from the top of the Isla del Sol in Lake Titicaca, at around 5 AM in the morning. A truly unforgettable moment of my life...

I like the way the cool colours in the image appear to be sandwiche between the two bands of warm colours.

stunning photograph! amazing colors the mountains look like they're floating!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

sebastopolgoose In reply to kayaksailor [2010-05-24 03:05:25 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! Actually, I suppose you could say they actually are floating, due to being on slabs of solid rock, commonly known as "continental shelves" drifting, or "floating" as it were on an ocean of molten rock, that is, the earth's core, the temperature of which increases steadily as one approaches the gravitational center of the planet. That's not the point however, the point is that they could indeed, be "floating".

Okay, I'll shut up now.

yeah, I know about those (I could get into them with you about how the Santa Barbara California coastline and therefore California got its bend Pacific plate sliding under the Continental and all....)

That sort of thing always interested me. Hurricanes and volcanoes too. I guess I have a rather morbid sense of curiosity
