I've got a question on this beautiful piece: how did you make the skirt? I suppose it's made of a few textures plus some brushes, right? It's always interesting to peek into other people's methods ... Hope you don't mind me asking...

Serkenil In reply to simoneheld [2010-11-21 16:13:54 +0000 UTC]

Of course I don't mind!
Well, I first draw the outline (lineart) for the shirt.
Then, I used a texture to cover each part, and I did this by using the distort and warp tools to fit it exactly where I wanted. Finally, I added shadows between the overlapping parts. That's pretty much it!
I hope that explains it, and if you have any other questions, I'd be pleased to answer them.

thanks a lot for your detailed answer. I love texturing, it's a lot of fun and like I said before, you've done an awesome job here. Very original.
How do you work? Do you get inspired by certain stock models or do you just experiment and see what comes out? I tend to do the second because plans usually never work out ...

Serkenil In reply to simoneheld [2010-11-23 13:46:13 +0000 UTC]

Textures are AWESOME! (texture freak here )

I mostly experiment as well! I might have a certain concept im my mind sometimes,
but I let the image itself, and the resources that I have available inspire me. It's fun and it's a more creative way for me to work, but usually I end up with an image that I don't always know what it's about. So, in the end, I observe the image and try to understand its meaning (it might take days sometimes )

simoneheld In reply to Serkenil [2010-11-23 16:25:16 +0000 UTC]

yeah, that's how I work too...letting stock images dictate me.
The funny thing is I always wanted to go more into the surreal category (similiar to yours) because there's so much depth in it and yet it stills looks like it's put together very randomly but I've always ended up doing the kind of conceptual stuff that I'm doing now.
The problem for me is not the technical stuff (I'm not a painter and I'm not very good at creating my own brushes) but coming up with a good concept. So often I'm just sitting there with a good background but no further concept on how to continue. Know this feeling? It's very frustrating because that's usually where I hit a dead end and I just delete the piece.

Serkenil In reply to simoneheld [2010-11-24 15:25:59 +0000 UTC]

I do know the feeling and I have it every single day.
What I do is, I don't force it. I might have no inspiration
for days and then suddenly, I'll sit and work in photoshop non-stop.
And, even though I rely on the resources I have at hand, the process I use
is more ''automated'', meaning that I do not always decide what to put where.
I browse through my textures, for exmaple, and I choose one which makes me want to use it. I do not think too much about what to do with it, at first. That's usally how I build up my image. I can't really explain it better than that. But, it's my influences (artists and concepts) that I admire which affect my work. So, (I don't know if you have) if you want to follow a certain style of work or a combination of styles, try and study about artists in that particular style and try to work yourself in different ways, following different techniques.

In the end, of course, it's your personality which affects how an image will turn out to be.

simoneheld In reply to Serkenil [2010-11-24 15:47:15 +0000 UTC]

I know that feeling, being directed by your stock images. These are the best moments about creating art when every piece of stock just finds its place.

I think lack of inspiration is what we all suffer from now and then and you've got the feeling you might never create anything worthy again. But it always passes although you would never have believed it before. It's really satisfactory...

You do use a lot of brushes too, don't you? Do you create them yourself?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Serkenil In reply to simoneheld [2010-11-24 15:58:16 +0000 UTC]

I do use brushes which I create myself!
Either I paint a shape in ps or create
them from photos and textures, and then
I adjust them in the brush settings panel.

simoneheld In reply to Serkenil [2010-11-24 18:04:22 +0000 UTC]

perhaps I should make my own brushes, too. I've never done it.
I think it's pretty cool to use your own resources but then again, you need the people who pose for you in the nude . have you got some people available?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Serkenil In reply to simoneheld [2010-11-25 14:01:20 +0000 UTC]

You should! It's really easy to do and as you said it's really great to use your own resources. As far as the model's are concerned, I do have a couple of friends who are willing to pose (not naked of course). I really like to use my own resources because I feel I have more control over the image and it's more a part of me, rather than the artworks I did with stock from other people.

There is so much more to art than what we can see right in front of us.
The hidden magic that turns reality into fantasy or vice-versa, is what art is all about. Using imagination and inspiration to create amazing works such as this piece.....
