aw. thats the sweetest, most selfless thing ive ever known anyone to do. it makes me kind of sad that she's a fictional charecter.

I just cannot say how much I love that she's a girl who happens to be deaf, not a Deaf Girl, if that makes sense. She's a real rounded character with strengths beyond her ability/disability.
My own disability may not show as clearly but characters like this just make me so happy.

Using her skills to speak for someone else. Definitely an honorable deed.

You're more than welcome, sweetie pie. We do that because you have put so much work in it and a lot of meaning with the words. but this page itself holds a lot of moral.

(also I have no idea how old Tareth is, she just seems way younger than everyone else. )

She's 17! :3 [link] She's a minor by our standards, but in her culture she'd be expected to be able to stand on her own by this point. I think she's a little like me (since I'm 24, almost 25, and have been mistaken for a 12-year-old child on many occasions), and just looks young -- though people around her would probably also be very likely to get her age wrong just from the way she carries herself.

Caraphae In reply to Shazzbaa [2011-11-09 06:47:08 +0000 UTC]

Well, I was working and engaged at 17, so I am not one to judge that as Too Young. But she does totally carry herself as younger- probably OverMom's influence, there. Hard to grow up when people are trying to keep you as a bonsai...

Also: WOW on drawing body language well enough to affect someone's readable age!

"Well I was going to say it's too dangerous because you're TWELVE, but yeah ableism TOO, geez, stop making extra points for me!"

I really love this dialogue and the way you've laid it out! The word balloons kind of stepping on each other works well here, I think. And it's a tiny thing, but I like Tareth's constant use of the lowercase i when speaking- it makes sense, she can't hear herself or others, and so doesn't put the inflections/emphasis on things quite like a hearing person would. So, bravo!

Shazzbaa In reply to Caraphae [2011-11-08 17:40:07 +0000 UTC]

AHAHAHAHA yes.

And oh man, thank you! I am perhaps a little too fond of interrupting word ballons, haha, but I am glad it is working. xD
And you've said so many kind things about Tareth's font -- thank you lots for all of them! That font is something I was working on for a long time when I first figured out I wanted to make this story into a comic; I'm really happy it's coming across well.

Well I am a LEETLE hyperaware of lettering anymore. It's such an undersung and underused part of comicking, but it's the closest we've got to a soundtrack!

Is it a hand-made font, then? What program did you use?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Shazzbaa In reply to Caraphae [2011-11-09 06:52:30 +0000 UTC]

I actually do all my lettering by hand, with my tablet! It's my favourite step in the digital half of putting a comic together. :3

I don't use any text fonts for the comic at all -- except as a spacing guide. I just put everything down in Times New Roman and then letter on top of it so that it'll have readable leading and be properly centered and such.

Ahhh, I remember some people talking early on about how some deaf people could and would talk, which I found interesting, but I'm glad to see it addressed in the comic itself.

Shazzbaa In reply to wandering-dreamer [2011-11-08 17:30:26 +0000 UTC]

Haha, thanks! I'm glad someone connected that. The fact that I knew this would come up eventually was a big part of why I didn't address it too much in the comments on the main site; a lot of the discussion about whether or not a profoundly deaf person can speak as cleanly as Tareth does isn't as applicable to her, since she was rather extensively coached. :"3

I'm gonna comment backwards today!
Process page: did you color it in once, decide it was too many darker shades, and then colored in the actual finished lineart?
Last panel: Awwwwwwwwwwww! Tareth! That was awesome and deep and <3333333 yes. Be independent and helpful!! You go, girl! *did I just really say that.... oh geez*
Middle panel: Tasty to monsters... Oh my goodness laughed so hard at that. XD
Second panel: Sev's reaction! Aw, just the same as when my friends are over and my mum's like "Hey! You! C'mere!" And they're all like: "Eep. Yes, Miss M's Mumma." Except my bestie. Then she's like "What's up mama-cita?" XD

Shazzbaa In reply to CloudMonsta [2011-11-08 17:53:42 +0000 UTC]

The process work is as follows:
Thumbnail of page -- I disregarded almost all of this.
Pencils of page -- if you're familiar with my process, you might know that I usually indicate more background than this, so that I can put perspective grids in for the next step.
Rough colours -- this was a new idea I had, I don't usually do this. I grabbed colours off the previous page (since they're in the same room, colours are gonna be similar) and slapped them on to see where I wanted the light to be and, also, situating them in the environment, and what placement would look the best colour-wise, which is something I don't usually remember to think about.
Inks -- and then I inked it.
Flats -- these are the flat colours, before I've added lighting or shading or anything.

The rough colours LOOK darker than the finished product only because there's no contrast. They're actually pretty close to what I ended up with, sans lighting.

And thank you so much for all your comments! That is a completely true assessment of Severian's relationship with Tareth's mother just btw. xD

Ooooooooooh that's really interesting! I almost never remember to think about things like rough colors, either... although I do understand how contrast seems to change a color drastically, even though hardly the shade has changed at all. It's like magic! Really cool, color theory... when you aren't doing it for school... then it's just boring. >>

Haha, you are totally welcome! I love to read your comics and see what new bits I can comment on and enjoy especially each time. ^^ I think it's a true assessment of most friends with their good friend's mothers. Moms are scary. And either your friend's mom is gonna be *scarier* than yours, or you'll have a better relationship with 'em. Funny how it works like that.
