Description For this tutorial I’m using Photoshop CS 5, though older versions may well be capable of the functions. No knowledge of vector masks and layer styles is required, I’ll try my best to lay out all the steps so following along is easy. I use a process similar to the one described below in most of my game art. Even if it includes hand painted elements you just can’t beat how versatile and easy to change the vector masks and layer effects are, so I rely on them whenever I can. They make revisions a real breeze.

As this is my first "real" tutorial I'm thankful for any feedback on how easy it is to read and follow, and if you felt it was useful!

Check out my blog for more in depth descriptions of stuff I do, and what I'm up to when not painting!

Wonderful! Thank you for the very clear, step by step instructions. For those of us who have never used vector out of intimidation, this is great!

I'm glad you're finding it helpful . Once you get used to doing stuff with vector masks there's no going back, they are so helpful in a multitude of ways!

I feel like a comparative luddite in the digital art world-- I almost exclusively use digital means to do my stuff, but I don't use much of anything outside of the paintbrush tool and maybe some gradients. I feel like it's time to buckle down and try new things; this is a great start!

I know how you feel, it took me the longest time to learn to use anything except the paintbrush in Photoshop! Knowing different tools is great though, it lets you pick the right tool for the job .
