Owl gryphons, as it turns out, grow very quickly. When Briggen's peers were still small and weak in their nests, he was nearly as big as his parents and his flight feathers had started growing in. The young gryphon didn't mind. He had been raised with a purpose: to serve Skrekrill and the Queen, and bring honor to his name. The sooner he could start, the better. Needless to say, it wasn't long after he learned to fly before he was put to work. His first mission: retrieve special medicines from Twistoult.

He went at night. Briggen was no coward, but he was inexperienced, and had never sparred with a skilled partner. It would be too risky to fly in when the sun was up, and he was better suited to the nighttime anyhow. He had sensitive ears and excellent night vision.

He soared quietly over the sleeping Twistoult Aerie, scanning ceaselessly for a patrol or guard. There were none. The Twistoult were foolish. With ease, he glided down to a network of caves in a cliffside by the misty rainforest. Spotting one that looked like it might be a shaman's work-cave, he slowed to a stall with a forward beat of his wings and set foot on the straw-covered stone floor. It was the right cave. He hurried forward, and began tying twine around tediously labeled gourds filled with various potions and salves. Then, he slung them around his neck, and retreated from the cave, taking off triumphantly (if a little clumsily) into the night.

Owls really do typically leave the nest a lot earlier than hawks or eagles do. And even when they're in the nest, they're enormous!
