Description This is a work in progress. I have been converting my ERTL Bill into a 0-4-0ST Bagnall based on Alfred and Judy from the Port of Par. In Thomas and Friends Bill and Ben are massively oversized and their Bachmann and Hornby models have the same issue. I decided I wanted a correctly sized OO/HO model so decided to use my spare ERTL Bill. I will name it "Chough" like Judy was originally going to be called and it will be green with yellow lining. So far I have reamed out the metal inside, drilled down the chimney, sourced a smokebox door and added (slight too) large buffers.

In the top image, Chough is sitting next to ERTL Ben for comparison and the bottom image it is sitting next to a standard BR 7 plank truck. In real life, Alfred and Judy are lower than a 4 plank truck but I think the size is much better than Bachmann and Hornby.

I am still looking for a chassis/motor small enough to use (I might have to scratch built or convert a N gauge model)

Sure, just let me know what chassis you use. I can't find a suitable chassis.
And post pictures!

It's not motorised either but Corbs is currently working on a similar project in elongated form, might be of interest.

I'm not sure if a Black Beatle would be too large as I haven't seen my die cast in some years and you would still need to add motion but it might be worth checking out this spec sheet.

In my opinion it would probably be easier to modify a Bachmann twin after you've thrown out the eye mechanism and installed a smaller motor but alternatively it's probably worth asking 2A Rail if he has plans to rescale his N shell design for an OO chassis.

This is the only plan I have for Alfred and Judy.

The resolution made it very hard to make out the figures but to the best of my knowledge they are correct, though I would take them with a pinch of salt, especially the inch fractions.

Thats great. Thanks for the information and image. The shapeways model looks like ertl not an actual scale model whiich would be much smaller. Do you know what chassis the shapeways models need?

No worries.
N really isn't my field but I presume this is the chassis he is referring to-

His design is noticeably compromised to be able to fit onto it and the same is true for some of his other products but otherwise he tries to keep things true to prototype from what I understand. In OO there are a few small chassis available such as the L&Y Pug, Hornby's Peckett and in production the Andrew Barclay, but the latter two will cost you a ton and I believe the motors are all too tall.

For a true squat cab Black Beatles and SPUDs are probably your best bet, but you would have to add your own motion. Not sure without checking if Bachmann's Bill/Ben is too long against the 5ft wheelbase proper but unless you're looking to go down the High Level kit route etc is still probably the best starting point (unless you leave the model as a push along of course).
Knuckles/Sparkshot has designed chassis for some of his designs and he's tentatively playing with the idea of doing the twins and a certain Avonside but I wouldn't count on them in the short run. 2A doesn't supply any custom chassis so if you're thinking of asking him to enlarge his shell I would consider under the hood first.

what about a Kato n gauge 103 chassis, cut off the side bits covering the wheels and extend the axles.
