I'm not very sneaky taking photos of people on the street, I'm quite open about it. If they are close, engage them in conversation. If they aren't, I just snap away. I'm often caught and I wave and most the time they wave back. I've only had a couple of mildly unpleasant experiences.
I'd love to be able to use the 'cute' smile idea, but I don't have one of those. All I've got is the old guy smile. Nothing cute about that.

thats what i do
take shots until confronted
and then i try to be nice and always offer to email them the photos

nice! especially the part with the people is intersting, i often wonder how i can get a picture of people without poiting directly in their face so that they can see me...
