What kind of steel did you use for your tongs.
Even cold blacksmiths tongs should not break when hit by accident. If they are that hard you wouldn't be able to quench them in water.
There are some models made from spring steel, but most are softer than that.
The broken part looks a bit burned to me, but that may be just the photo.

My guess is rebar, though I'm not sure. And they didn't break 'cause I _hit_ em, they broke 'cause I reefed on 'em under the assumption the orange-hot but much thicker end bit would bend first.
The broken part's not burned, that's just how it broke. It didn't get near hot enough to burn.

Well, gives me an excuse to make more tongs, I guess. Dad made the ones I've been using. I've got two or three designs I ought to slap out when I've got the time.
