Description This is something I've had in my head for ages, well, I say ages, from about two months ago. But I had too much on then to get it down, but I've always kind wanted to even the 'moment' for this feeling has passed. I'm not totally satisfied with it, I wanted the horse to be a touch more distressed, the the rider to seem a little more controlling, as it is he looks quite gentle, but then perhaps that's even more appropriate. Either way, the mare is unhappy.

The ever present lyrics read:

I thought I kicked the traces
I thought the wheels would spin
I thought I jumped the fence and bolted
Looks like I'm back again..

And are to be acredited to REM from their song 'Wanderlust', I heard it around the right time and it inspired this image for how I felt.

I saw this a while back, and recently I was doing a drawing of a carriage horse and those lyrics kept coming back to me because it fit them so well - took me ages to work out where I remembered them from and find this beautiful drawing!

And then I went and downloaded the song!

*grin* So glad you liked, its a pretty cool song, but I especially like this beginning bit. It definately described how I felt then.

you capture horses' emotions so well. awesome. and the rider seems pretty firm to me--heels locked and hands pulling.

the rider seems too controlling, and the mare is very unhappy, so you definitely got your point across with this, even though you feel otherwise. excellent study of the equine/human relationship.

that is a nice capture of emotion. Frusteration.

Maybe if the nostrils were flared more, and some sign of sweat or gnashing of teeth on the bit too. Pawing hoof wishing to go forward, or rear up.

But it still looks good as is too. Like the pony has again gave back in to the command of the rider.

I love the mare's expression. She looks so dejected, this rocks. Her face is unique and memorable. What you do with horses is wonderful.

Purr thanks. I love your nature drawings. I study them for technique because the only thing I've seen to compare them with is Charles R. Knight -- and someday I will have to do horses, in medieval tack, as fantasy illustration. I'm not ready yet, but I'll learn.

I love it when people draw horses in some of those positions that are so familiar to us who are around them, even if it's more difficult to capture on paper. ! :3

This is great, I love the different shading styles you have used, the detailed section draws attention to the power struggle between the rider and horse. The sketched section is very simple but effective, makes the drawing more complete but doesnt draw the attention away from the focus of the picture. Great work

Her head does look large.. partly its the perspective, but I may have made it a a touch too large even with perspective in mind, I 'll check the photo..

I really like the way you did the mare's expression, even if you dont find it's distressed enough (it looks like a natural expression horses have, that's really impressive. I find that horses are hard to put emotions on)
I's suggest maybe making the girth more prominent, it looks like it's not there at first glance (I know it is there, but it is not outlined as heavy as the rest of the tack)

Brilliant, with a very good message. I love the raw unfinished look too, and the obvious tension between horse and rider. It reminds me of a mare I used to own...who really had a mind of her own.

It looks so good, Utty! As has been said, I love the unfinished look. And yeah, there might be things you could do to create more tension, but overall, it looks great.

DreamHorseStudios [2005-01-25 23:05:18 +0000 UTC]

Hmm... everything looks very good, though I have noted a few things that you could change if you want to make the horse seem more upset and the rider more demanding. Firstly, the length of the reins should be shortened a good bit and the rider's hands lifted some to show more of a power struggle. The resulting action would make the mare open her mouth a little more and either tuck her head even further or lift it in an attempt to evade bit pressure. I'm not sure if you're intending on changing anything... those are just a few little thoughts.
