Description Originally this was meant to be a double-stone watercolor, but after I'd painted it, I found that the stones I was going to use didn't match very well, so now it's just a regular watercolor painting.

Here we see Summer not wanting to give up her leaf to Autumn, who is quite ready for her turn to change the leaves to pretty colors. But Summer never wants to leave, and so she and Autumn fight back and forth, which is why in the fall some days are chilly and some days are hot. Finally in the end, since Autumn is the older sister, she gives Summer a firm peck on head and bounces away with her rightful leaf.

Several working titles that were going through my head:

Seasons Fight
Turn of Seasons
Sibling Rivalry
Gimme!
MOOOOOOM.
Big Puffy Season Birdies.

I eventually settled on "Autumn's Turn" since it has a nice double meaning. :3

This is also on sale on Etsy: [link] Oop, nevermind. Sold!

And also an interesting little 'step by step' image showing the progress from pencil sketch to finished painting: [link]

...wow, i just love how you've shown what you were thinking when you were doing this in the comments, it add so much more meaning....just beautiful colours, i also like how you have made the green compatible to the oranges by adding more yellow. I really think that any more contrast between them would have spoiled this piece for me, so great job!!! Love the feathers and just everything about this is amazing.
I really love how you've done the leaf and the colour change in it is very nice.

just wow..instant fav!!!

Absolutely beautiful, but what do you mean by double stone watercolor?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

windfalcon In reply to lerosenoir [2009-11-11 21:14:48 +0000 UTC]

I originally was going to make this into a stone watercolor painting, like those found in my journal entry here: [link] I take small stone cabochons and create a painting with them attached to the paper. That was my plan for this (to have two stones on it), but I didn't like the way they looked so I kept them off.

Oh, yes, yes, I remember these now! Thanks for clearing that up! But I'm sure you'll find use for those stones later.

I was always wondering if you used inks you in your watercolor paintings. The way you do it, it's hard to tell but it adds a crispness that I think you'd loose otherwise. And very nice choice of a title, very appropriate given the time of year it is right now.

windfalcon In reply to silvermoonnw [2009-10-27 15:11:11 +0000 UTC]

Sometimes I draw with ink in my paintings, but usually I don't. Usually when I use ink it's for smaller or quicker paintings where I want to get a lot of detail. Also sometimes I just get in the mood to work with ink and then watercolor over it. You definitely get a different feel to the work depending on if you use ink or only watercolor. And thanks!

This is such a pleasure to look at. The colours are so lovely. I'm an Autumn child so I'm especially touched by this...

Either I'm blind or it doesn't show the price on Etsy anymore (says it's sold out), but I'm curious, how much did it sell for?

...I don't want to close this tab because it's so beautiful. Words can't quite describe how much I like it!

windfalcon In reply to Vastatuuli [2009-10-27 15:13:06 +0000 UTC]

Oh! Haha I didn't know it sold until I read your comment! Sorry, I never know how quickly certain pieces will go (if at all). To answer your question, this piece was originally posted for $60.

Ah, so it was you! The funny part was, I always check my DA before my email, so I discovered this was sold by someone who commented, "How much is it? It says it's sold out on Etsy."

I'm going to try to ship it out today. Thanks a lot!

This is a good example of the visual art going beyond its usual boundaries. With you little text, it makes the picture twice the size with meaning.

I love to hear what was behind a piece to really appreciate it to its fully. Thanks.
