Im hoping to do a few bits of fan art in my style then try do commissions of other peoples characters in my style for them. i think Ill make them kind of flat but not entirely with different fabrics.

That sounds like a good place to start. Flat or 2d ones are good for learning with, and I think your drawings will work well with them. just remember not everything will work out perfect first time
also when making the pattern and cutting it out of fabric, leave plenty of seam allowence, it will be smaller then you expect in the end.
