I think it's going well? I've never played the game before. I just finished the Fire Crystal and my classes so far are Thief, Sorcerer (also called Magic Knight, I think, my version has all the original names) and Bard.
How many Berserkers did you get?

2...though I understand I could have gotten 3, so I guess I dodged that bullet.
I ended up with thief, ninja, berserker, berserker. The beginning of the game was very tough and all my people are on an intravenous potion drip. You can't give commands to berserkers, they just attack at random and they don't really become super-murder machines without a lot of work. My thief has done fairly little other than steal items and play wet nurse. Thankfully I have a ninja so raining shuriken on bosses is a legitimate strategy.
The upshot of all this is that I now have the almighty chicken knife and once I'm done leveling it (by running away 255 times) one of my berserkers should become an absolute murder machine.
