God, this should launch a thousand real world efforts. Engineers would look at this and go, "A YUP!"

Very nice design I hope that real life exoskeletons get to this stage of developement,
the smaller, compact, more streamline look.

Oooh, neat! This is pretty close to the basic design I worked on. You captured so many great details that everyone else misses. I'm not much an artistic type, so I hope you don't mind a more engineering-focused critique
- The circular joints around the limbs are the first thing I noticed. Awesome! That's a great way to get another degree of freedom lined up with the appropriate joint.
- This design does kind of beg the question of how the operator gets in/out of it, but really all exoskeleton designs do, so that's fine. Still, some hinges or locks or something would imply that the frame opens up or something.
- Likewise, one has to wonder where the power and control for all of these actuators is, but the Rule of Cool usually dictates leaving that out, so no problem. I usually default to just hanging a big blob of volume off of my design's back or belly to stand in for those systems. Tends to ruin the athletic lines though.
- Are the finger joints not connected to the wrist? It looks like the thumb in particular is just a little mechanical thumb-glove. It's important to extent the skeleton all the way around the fingers. I still get annoyed when I see Matt Damon ripping a robot's head off in Elysium with his bare fingers.
- Several of the joints have a single piston crossing over two degrees of freedom. Like the big piston on the outside of the leg. If the leg rotates it'll twist that piston out of alignment with the knee.
- It looks like a lot of the joints (ankle, hip, shoulder, wrist) don't actually have enough degrees of freedom or actuators to control them. I think that's why most people leave them out of their designs. It's actually pretty hard to figure out how to integrate things like that because audiences are already familiar with them from seeing earth moving equipment and whatnot. Seems to be easier to just hide all of the actuators and imply that there are enough of them to provide the necessary strength and range of motion.
- Many of the pistons look like they're too short to actually allow a comfortable range of motion, but they could be extended and just attached to points farther apart.
- It looks really cool. Nice lines, textures and colors. I look forward to seeing a layer of armor! I don't think you're going to be able to animate it or pose it satisfactorily, though. The way things are laid out if he moves too far out of the neutral action figure pose the limitations of the joints will become obvious.
Anywho, I hope that was helpful and not just stating the obvious. I get excited when I see people putting this much effort into my personal favorite genres.

Hi sososketchy this suit has a few neat tricks up its sleeve, I will explain in detail in the schematic view that I'm working on now.
to point a few things out, for the power supply he is going to have a small backpack with a generator in it and a power cell, but his suit also converts body heat into electricity.
as for angles of freedom there are 3 locations that have hidden pivot points, his wrists, above his knees and above his ankles, those round parts can turn.

I just noticed that there are two hidden hydraulics on the back of his thighs up near his hip joint, they must have been hidden, going to have to fix that lol

thanks for the feedback

NOW THIS looks more like an exoskeleton, unlike the crappy one DARPA showed us.

I like the fact that it has those (whatever they are called) things on the back. It makes it appear to be heavily reinforced; capable of holding and carrying huge amount of load. Love the design.

DARPA are noobs... >_>

I agree. DARPA are noobs wasting money on things that are already done by other nations...or better yet, already in practice.

Awesome design dude If you don't mind me asking: I'm kinda new to 3d modeling, what program did you use to make this?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Avitus12 In reply to Cee-H [2014-10-07 15:58:49 +0000 UTC]

Hy Drake I use 3ds max 15 and V-ray for rendering, all the textures are done wit heather Photoshop or 3ds max view-port canvas.

Thanks I just got through a 3d modeling class and geez how complicated it seems at first! It was pretty fun though, I really want to get more into it.

I have never used anything but 3ds max, it may be a little harder for beginners but you cant complain about the results

I don't have 300,000 but I do have a huge interest in technology. So care to add some spec to this work of art? I would love to read them.

even the helmet is supported by hydraulics. so he dont break his neck?
i hope u give him some armor plating.
