Thanks Ilona! It was a happy accident. I like pumpkin and pine as a color combination.

Popeye! That cartoon was great. Couldn't make it today...too politically incorrect.

The PC police wouldn't approve of Olive Oyl body shaming thin women, Wimpy mocking the poor, Brutus stereotyping bullies, and Popeye? So violent and stupid, a poor role model for kids, especially since he was a smoker. The only thing the left wouild approve of is the spinach.

A liberal Popeye cartoon today would have Popeye share the spinach with Brutus, Olive Oyl and Wimpy, then they form a gang and battle alien robots using their super strength they got from the spinach. Popeye quits smoking, Wimpy stops eating hamburgers, Brutus slims down, and Olive Oyl gets breast implants to improve her self-esteem.

One thing I find fascinating about Popeye...he used to say "I yam what I yam". That is close to the translation of the tetragrammaton YHWH: I am the I am. Yahweh. Jehovah.

Hey, some good thinking there on the YHWH angle.  Real good.  Good enough to steal.  I must see how best to handle this Hebraic happenstance!  Bud Segar will be spinning in his grave.

I still wonder if it really was happenstance or intentional.

Anyway, Popeye was in essence very sweet, a truly original comic with a give-a-fuck drawing style that can only be compared to Bringing Up Father or Blondie. Economy of line, exaggerated features, clearly defined characters. I always identified with Wimpy. I'll gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today.

www.cbr.com/bobby-london-expla… This guy took over Popeye for King Features and Ha ha! what a mistake that was.  Him and my brother have got into huge shouting matches at each other on the net.  I like him a lot, but he is a hopeless nutcase liberal.  Still, very funny and that is what counts.

Wow! Great article. Who knew the world of comics had so much intrigue?
When I returned to the US in 2016, I noticed some of the old comics I remembered from my youth were still running in the Sunday funnies, only being drawn by different artists. Sometimes I think some comics should just quietly fade away. Can you imagine Peranuts being drawn by someone else? As the article said, Popeye often addressed the issues of the day, and doesn't update well.
