I've been struggling with drawing guys from the side (which consisted of sneaking glances at the guys during history class XDDDDDD) so this is pretty helpful.

Awesome!
I'm kind of a wimp when I draw profile faces and make them pretty close to the formula every time. I should intensely stare at references more often.

I've noticed in my own drawing that as soon as I think I know something pretty well, I forget to practice it. When I was making this tutorial I had to keep going back to Loomis' model and double check the measurements. xD

The first real guy looks... wrong even if is real.
But looking him closely, I noticed his head is sligtly tilted toward front view, is tot exaclty side view.
Even in RL ears lie in the middle most of the time. Sometimes I see people with shorter skull in the back, not with ears positioned so in the back

I see more often faces that don't have the equal thirds. My face is very in proportion (my body aswell, I'm about 7,5 heads tall despite my little height) and I'm even symmetric. I can be a good model for beginners.

True, the guy could be at a slight angle, and depending on the camera lens that was used, there's likely to be distortion from that as well which can be tricky.

TeachingMyselfSpeed In reply to AliceSacco [2016-04-09 21:24:55 +0000 UTC]

You're right, if you look at his shoulders he is slightly at an angle. But I think the feeling of 'wrongness' comes from his unusual combination of a prominent brow, coupled with a very small and delicate chin. It makes his features look almost distorted, as if the bottom half was shrunk with liquify->pinch.

But that goes to show just how varied faces can be. The formula is a good starting point, but we shouldn't be afraid to bend the rules a little- because nature does that too!

I have never seen the ideal drawing of a human head next to one that is referenced.
Seeing how close they are and how they can differ was very interest.

Definitely! I'm super interested in the differences from the ideal face now. xDย

What a coinkadink. Normally don't browse when drawing, but this'll come in handy for my pic. I'm rather bad at placement of things on the face. Thankies

No problem, we can thank Andrew Loomis for the placements, I just broke it down into steps.
