“Here, wait!” I hurried past him to the base of a hill. “You get the best view from up here.”
I proceeded to climb, and he followed behind excitedly.

Upon reaching the top, my heart sank as I stared in horror at the once beautiful sight before me-
The entire village was in ruins.
Bright orange flames licked the sides of the various snow structures, melting and deforming them; structures that once served as places of rest and knowledge, now all but destroyed; peaceful innocents, now just more casualties in the Nightmare King’s quest for ultimate power.
“Oh no...”
“What’s the matter, Blue Steve?” Rainbow Steve said softly, trying his best to lighten the mood. “It’s a very, uh, well-lit town.”
“NO!” I bit out angrily as I shut my eyes tight, clenching my teeth and balling my hands into fists. “It isn’t! I...It...”
I was shaking. None of the Steves in that village deserved this. I looked back up at the tall, crude ice sculpture that towered high above the site and snaked out every which way. It was never there before. No, the inhabitants made that- in an attempt to defend themselves against someone—either the King himself or his new minion—and fight back. But not a soul moved amongst the carnage. It was desolate, abandoned...
I lept into the air and released the bitter anger growing inside me towards the dark clouds shadowing us in a fierce, piercing, primal yell of pain- pain of knowing that it was too late to do anything to help my people, that I was absent when they needed me.
“Why?!”

The Nightmare King was going to pay for what he did.
