Description This tutorial is written with new/ light user deviants in mind. Its a guide to help deviants write better more useful comment. Comment writing on Deviant art has been lost for quite some time. Comments like "Nice pic" or "Cool " just don't make the grade. I hope that this tutorial helps folks understand how writing better comments can help them make friends, gain respect, and help their fellow artists grow.

After the recent moving of categories, and restructuring of galleries, I thought it was time to resubmit this to its new and rightful place.

I rewrote much of it and added a more current example. I corrected it so now you can read it rather then just looking at the thumbnail.

i need to say this is wonderful so plain but so true ^^ many of my watchers keep making me such as comments,at the point i submited something ranting it and looks like they just din't paid attention.Theid said 'funny ^_^'...they just don't reat the artist's comments, and i'm sure if i post a Sonic OC,they shall say 'it gonna be the new character to the next Sonic Game!Yay!',because these klutzs just don't read.Like my friend ~EnigmaticPenguin says:"good comments are worth their weight in gold."
so finnaly,i farewell and say

you're welcome it's really annoying the people don't know to do a real comment anymore:I just keep recieving 'cute!' or 'nice job!' and so on.Thing which makes me mad each time i see my inbox

ivyc In reply to kittyXartist [2007-05-12 16:24:14 +0000 UTC]

I think the general idea is that "nice" and "cute" are still appreciated, but a well thought out comment is of greater help to the artist.

Than you, it was my intention to set up something easy to remember, and quick to put to use. I really tried to get something simple enough to use for a basis, and staight forward enough to elaborate on with ease. Thanks for the comment, glad you found it useful!

This is a very helpful guide to commenting. You explain things clearly and simply and I particularly liked your sample comment. It's too easy to draw a mental blank when you sit down to comment on something and I think the checklist in your tutorial provides a very handy basis for creating a piece of useful feedback. Thanks for sharing this.

A definite .

This is a good Idea and tut.
I Didn't however realise people needed to be taugt how to comment by you They should have learned how to from trial and error along with reading other's comments.
still I like this idea and will it so that others who look at my page see it.

Thank you for the comment and fav.

You are absolutely right, people shouldn't have to be taught how to comment. Least of all by me. But, time and time again I encounter, comments that prompt me to believe that perahps some folks need a little direction. Or perhaps even just a little motivation.

Thanks again for the fav and the support, its always much appreciated!!

Wow. I'm in love with this tutorial! I think it's very impressive, and from now on i'll think more about every comment i'll put on a deviation. Everyone should read this! The people who love leaving nasty comments especially should read it. Thankyou for your inspiring words.

I've always wanted to try and comment on art, and try to make it meaningful. Thankfully this tutorial has given me a place to start. I suppose it's then just a matter of practice makes perfect.

One little thing, it could be interpreted as an example or irony, but for the step that talks about proofreading; step five, it's mislabeled "Step six".

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ivyc In reply to WolfySpice [2005-09-01 12:11:44 +0000 UTC]

lol... what a great comment. See.

Thanks it is alot about pratice makes perfect. If you simply comment a lot not only will you get better at doing it but you will be helping out your fellow deviants become better artists.

Thanks about the "Step six" error. I'm a terrible speller and often don't catch these things upon proofreading. Although I do try and that is the point. It is quite ironic the location of this particular oversight though. lol.

Yoggington In reply to ivyc [2006-07-20 23:45:01 +0000 UTC]

More irony Ivy, you've gone and mispelled practise here! (*kidding* of course)

A fine tutorial, with a simple, solid structure, and without the condescension that often goes hand-in-hand with this type of thing. I particularily like the faded out 'devious thoughts' box at the top left.

I'm surprised it has not been more popular, a DD here would really benefit the community at large, although it might need an update before that could happen. For instance the zoom in buttons, but maybe leave that ironic typo in, just for laughs.

I think I used to be a better commenteer (commenter?) when I started here, but I've slipped of late. But just look at me now, one quick read through of this deviation, and already I'm leaving a hopefully helpful productive comment!

I love the way that you were able to put all of the information in only 6 easy steps. Also how you have a final example. I think it would be more understandable if you would have examples of many different situations. Because even if someone reads this they may need an example to show what exactly you mean. All else is simply well done.

Give yourself a pat on the back!

I have toyed with redoing it as well, but its been done 3 times and is one of the most popular pieces in my gallery now. But, I might still revisit it yet.

Thanks again for the great comment!

Commenting isn't always about criticizing. Its good sometimes just to let the person know what you think of it. If you don't know much about that type of art. or it simply is a fine example of the given medium. Then say so. Simply speak up and say: "I can't complain I think you did a splendid job. I wouldn't suggest changing a thing." Then offer some insite into why you like it so much. What particular thing drew you to look at the work in the first place. Its all about speaking your mind.

There really should be more on DA about comments. Most comments I see really are the "great job, I like!" that you mentioned...I'm +faving this right now...(hopefully to spread the word)

Are you at all affiliated with The Comment Revolution? If not, you should definitely check it out!!

I'll 'tells 'yah, if more people would give constructive comments 'round this place .. this place would be, uhh .. an estimated 100 times better.

They should take heed to your well written words as well. A spiff write up .. something an English professor would do for struggling, uh .. student-commenters.

Why didn't you make this into an HTML 'tut though?

Works either way, however.

COOL PIC

Of course, just kidding. I think it's great that you're attempting to correct the "cool pic " comment problems. The guide was pretty simple and easy to understand, and I think I'll try to keep its points in mind when commenting on things in the future. That was also a pretty interesting example pic you chose for a sample comment in your tutorial. I thought maybe it was a little redundant to put that the tutorial was by you twice (on the top and the bottom) since example comments from you were used in it and of course it will have your name on the top of the screen when you post it.. but it's probably a good idea in case anyone would try to take it or something. ^^

i think its a really good idea to write a "tutorial" like this, but as Obenson has said, we should make this more available for new deviants to read.

If there is a forum for new users, you should post a link in there.

I have seen a few good texts like this on DA, some are even humourous, but still give out some good info, i think these should all be linked on the FAQ pages.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ivyc In reply to Pokoa [2004-04-05 17:19:35 +0000 UTC]

I'd love to get it put out in faq. Unfortunately, I think it would have to be DTF or something to get noticed enough for that to happen... and I just don't have that amount of popularity around here so I don't really know if it will happen but I'm looking into ways perhaps.

...funny how deviant is run by popularity...
