Maedhros and Maglor cornered by Eonwe and his army after they stole the Silmarils for the last time. And yes after nearly a year of no Lotr work from me I'm back! T u T Unfortunately this one is kind of rushed as its for an assignment and I ended up gaussian blurring my way through a lot of things T u T And possibly made things too dark but I do want to emphasise the Silmaril Maedhros has in his hand (yes I'm aware skin isn't that translucent but since the Silmaril defies all laws of physics lets pretend its so radiant it shines through flesh > <)Related content

I’m one of those masochists who do this every year ahaha but this year was special cuz I manage to catch a cinema screening and I’ve never seen it on big screen before so it was an amazing experience, the people who’s first introduction to lotr from the cinema are lucky indeed T u T

LOL and he was really successful. He definely used the best sceneries he could to make the watcher want to freaking be there!

He did say it was a 8 hour train trip that inspired him to film lotr in NZ; having gone on half of that train trip i can see why T u T Also the train was a scenic train not one of those bullet ones ahaha otherwise we might not have pj lotr XD And naw the country will always be there hopefully one day you can come over!

I think this is a stunning piece of art- I like the punky Maedhros look! But his face is so grim and desparate- and the spears etc all aimed at him are meaningful, everything is against him- the Oath is implicit in those spears. He has no chance and he is pained by the burning of the Silmaril but he aint ever going to give that up! His posture lends itself to that overall sense of real despair- such a tragic figure.

It's fantastic! I really do like the effect of the silmaril shining through his hand as its fire sears his flesh. He looks defiant and ferocious, but also as though he's grimacing in agony...

Naw thank you! That's exactly the expression I wanted him to have, I was a bit scared it might ended up being a frankenstein of emotions because its like I want him to be in pain but spiteful so its like two levels of grimacing XD

"Two levels of grimacing" sums it up well! (The whole composition of the work is so great, btw - M&M framed by the spears, and standing back to back which gives that sense of being trapped, and making our focus squarely on Maedhros.)

Yes! I tried so hard to compose it in a deliberate way that just pulls your eyes towards Maedhros haha (short of flashing neon green arrows above him being like look at Mae look at him!). The greatest feedback I ever received from an instructor is the more stupidly obvious it is the smarter it actually is and my eyes never went so big XD

Lol, the spears ARE actually arrows pointing at Mae saying Look at him!! I'll remember that advice too! (Tho for the me the technical problem is how to make it stupidly obvious even if I'm trying my darnedest to...)

Haha that is true when I finished it I wondered if it was too on the nose XD My composition sketches are literally red lines with arrows going around the page looking like a treasure map if that helps T u T If like a pose or hair isn't following those lines I'm like the hand of the art god compels you to move in this direction even if you're not supposed to be bending like this XD
