Before I even read the description on this I gotta say it was the colour that jumped out at me... It's exceptionally well done! Bold, clean, accurate and contributes massively to the dynamics of this pic.

that's what I like to hear! - it's given that these covers will be well drawn, so it's reassuring to know that peeps think my colouring is up to standard for the job!

This is amazing stuff. I draw some Scooby-Doo stuff (I never drew a lick until my 30s), and even have a line of fancomics. Only recently am I attempting shading...second level. This is amazing multi-level shading stuff you have here. Most folks will focus on the subject, but I'm blown away by your attention to detail, shading this to give it a hyper-realism look.

Hi Jag/John, Thanks very much for taking the time to write such a thoughtful comment. Considering you only really started drawing in your 30s I think you're doing very well! - shading and things are only ever going to be secondary to good draughtsmanship. - Never the less I really appreciate your compliments, having worked as a comic-colourist for the past 3 or so years I think I've got my basic cartoon-style colouring pretty much down, so lately I've been taking liberties with secondary lighting and blurred backgrounds and such to add a little more depth. There's a limit to what you can do with a title like SD since you have to work within the tight confines of what WB will permit, but it's always fun to push the boundaries within those limits.

Thanks again, and keep up the good work!

Thanks...I'd love to do better than "well," but the family and job come first. But you've got a great job.

A few years ago, some fellow Scooby fans and novice artists were having an online chat. One said "Wouldn't it be great if drawing/writing Scooby was our job?" My response is "Well, yes, but then it would be a JOB, with all of the cons that go with the pros. We'd try and do different things on our own time.

Keep pushing!

yeah.. you soon realise when you take a job like this that it's not all fun and games. we work ridiculously hard for very little money/respect. There's no job security, no sick-leave, and not even a guarantee that we'll get paid at all half the time. Like any job, it often takes the fun out of it .. it's very hard to motivate to yourself to work on personal/fun projects when you spend all day doing it for a living.
That said, I can't see myself doing anything else for the immediate short term anyway, I couldn't stand the thought of being in the rat race. -_- - you hit the nail on the head when you said the pros and cons, ANY set up always has both \:]

Boy this posting should be out there for everyone who thinks the cartoonist has the cushiest job ever.

I've often wondered, however, if some comic book publisher wouldn't take a look at my five Scooby fancomics (am halfway through my sixth and final one) and say "hey, a better artist could make this amazing." They wouldn't need to write it or draw it from scratch...just improve on my stuff. And I'd be flattered if they'd try, even if I didn't get more than a little line in 4.5 pt font saying "Original idea by X." But I have no idea how to toss this to the comic publishers.

hrrm.. I'd love to offer you advice there, but the truth us the comic I work on is only re-prints. - If they ever start originating stories/comics for it I'll let you know

Well i hope it does! And i'll be sure to look out for it if i'm out and about! ^^ If i see it i can say i know who drew the cover, than people will say "oh.... good for you" XD

KatCardy In reply to Dragonianfire [2009-08-12 12:19:29 +0000 UTC]

- Coloured the cover. I can't take credit for drawing it, that goes to Lee Carey. (you have to be a Warner Bros trained/certified artist to draw on a title like Scooby Doo.. sadly that's a position I'll probably never find myself in so I'll stick to colouring it for now.)

Ah right, i see, well i would be the same way in your situation, i would never take credit for something i didn't do. So yeah, i knew you didn't draw it, it would have been better if you did ^^

I love Scooby, and I never thought how he'd look with any kind of bottom clothing, but I really hate the way CN is milking this series.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KatCardy In reply to andrewk [2009-08-12 10:18:14 +0000 UTC]

Hey Andrew, good of you to stop by - I'm not sure about CN personally since I don't watch a whole lot of TV, but I know someone did a new version of Scooby do where they were all stylised.. is that's what you're talking about? Or is it just endless re-runs of the old shows?
This cover is from the comic that's sold over here in the UK, but again it's basically re-prints of stories that were written/drawn a while back... I guess for as long as it still sells/gets viewers they'll continue to use it. \:]

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

andrewk In reply to KatCardy [2009-08-12 15:50:13 +0000 UTC]

Nonono even LATER! Now, CN has been marketing a new Scooby-Doo MOVIE (an original of there's) piting the crew in an Origin story in high school! The Scooby model doesn't even look anything like the one from the theatrical releases... not that THAT dog was ever better to begin with... this new model's eyes look like they're more faithful to the cartoon actually! BUT GOD. They just keep digging themselves into a hole!
