Description This was an exercise I did that was a lot of fun. It basically outlines my artistic influences. These are all the guys I aspire to be as an artist. It's in no ways complete but it's more or less pretty comprehensive. Some of them are probably very obvious, some maybe not so much, who knows. Anyways, it was very enlightening for me because it's something I haven't thought about in a while and it made me really re-evaluate my art and figure a few things out. I'd highly recommend it to anyone else.

I really wish we had the chance to do that Kirby-inspired pic for Chaotic. Ah, well.

This is a fantastic idea overall and I can't wait to work on mine. Methinks you've just inspired a lot of other people to do the same...

Oh nice, I own that very Immonen original. It's a nice list of influences Khary. I think the only one I'm surprised at is Kirby.

KharyRandolph In reply to RyanOttley [2010-08-18 03:54:10 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I got really into Kirby while I was in college. I was still a major image clone and I started researching him because all the Image guys (Liefeld, Lee, Larsen) were all worshipping him and saying how he influenced them. The guy was a genius when it came to making action-y energetic comics. Alot of the language of superhero comics is directly based off of stuff he created.

P.S. I got me some Immonens as well. I look at them like once a week, lol.

Yeah Kirby's done some amazing stuff, his design sense was so crazy too. I'm now curious who HIS influences were.

Well the Frank Miller influence comes as no surprise AT ALL, and I gotta agree he is one of THE most awesome artists ON THE PLANET!! Also anybody who loves Shirow as much as I do is worthy of my respect for their taste, and Sky Doll was pretty choice too so props on the Barbucci lovage. But question ... d'you know/like Chris Bachalo?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KharyRandolph In reply to Grigori77 [2011-02-05 08:24:59 +0000 UTC]

I think Chris Bachalo is fantastic. I don't count him as a major influence, but I'll still buy anything the guy does.

Grigori77 In reply to KharyRandolph [2011-02-06 02:52:49 +0000 UTC]

He is most fantastic, yes. And I wonder if he might not be at least an unconscious influence, cuz I can definitely see a hint of it in your work ...

Great influences, man. Never thought about Petty but now that you mention it, I can really see it. Can't believe you left out Liefeld, though.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KharyRandolph In reply to ronsalas [2010-08-16 15:34:31 +0000 UTC]

You know, in all seriousness I really thought about putting him in because he WAS a major influence on me. But you know, not really in the last 10 years or so. Plus I would have also had to thrown in Marc Silvestri and a bunch of other Image guys as well. So I just kinda decided to say that I was a blanket Jim Lee/image-clone guy.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ronsalas In reply to KharyRandolph [2010-08-16 15:38:58 +0000 UTC]

I was serious 'cause I remember you were saying how he was an influence on you a while back. I can't see it myself but it's not for me to judge. I do see a lot more Silvestri and Lee than any of the Image guys, though.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KharyRandolph In reply to ronsalas [2010-08-16 17:34:09 +0000 UTC]

I guess these days it wouldn't be so much in style so much as in attitude. I always liked that his comics were so heavy on energy and action. Plus they never took themselves that seriously. So I took that from his work.

Also, dude was like a gateway drug to Jack Kirby.

How do U feel about Olivier Coipel? In turns of movement in his line work U both have this complex simplicity when defining a gesture of the human form that make it so easy for the eye to enjoy...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KharyRandolph In reply to BluLynes [2010-08-16 05:39:02 +0000 UTC]

I think Coipel is great man. I haven't seen enough of his artwork to call his work an influence, but it's definitely inspirational for sure. I'll buy anything that guy puts out.

BluLynes In reply to KharyRandolph [2010-08-16 08:00:03 +0000 UTC]

Hell Yeah,
I've been doin' just that as of late...
His work is so subtle and yet so full of energy it's crazy...
When I see his work I wanna throw something and wring my clenched fist in frustration with hopes of just an ounce of his knowledge...
...but yeah, his work is dope...

KharyRandolph In reply to suicidalassassin [2010-08-17 01:19:13 +0000 UTC]

Ha. I tried reading it one time, unsuccessfully. More than anything it's a showpiece for the art.
