Description A monstrosity which rampaged in Dunwich Village. Overall shape was inspired by tiny water bears [link]

"Bigger’n a barn...all made o’ squirmin’ ropes...hull thing sort o’ shaped like a hen’s egg bigger’n anything, with dozens o’ legs like hogsheads that haff shut up when they step...nothin’ solid abaout it—all like jelly, an’ made o’ sep’rit wrigglin’ ropes pushed clost together...great bulgin’ eyes all over it...ten or twenty maouths or trunks a-stickin’ aout all along the sides, big as stovepipes, an’ all a-tossin’ an’ openin’ an’ shuttin’...all grey, with kinder blue or purple rings... an’ Gawd in heaven—that haff face on top!... (...) Oh, oh, my Gawd, that haff face - that haff face on top of it... that face with the red eyes an' crinkly albino hair, an' no chin, like the Whateleys... It was a octopus, centipede, spider kind o' thing, but they was a haff-shaped man's face on top of it, an' it looked like Wizard Whateley's, only it was yards an' yards acrost... "

Cool! The Dunwich Horror is my second best Lovecraft story, only behind At The Mountains of Madness!

My favourites are Dream Quest and Shadow Over Innsmouth but Dunwich Horror and Color Out of Space are right behind them.

Color Out of Space is cool too! Lovecraft came up with very many unique abominations that the so-called 'monsters' these days definitely lack the frightening quality. And that includes Stranger Things and The Strain. I find them stupid.

Well I aim my art to be somewhat in the spirit of the oldschool stuff. Perhaps that's why you enjoy it.

Chyba raczej na odwrót, D&D sie inspirowało Lovecraftem. Nigdy się nie wgłębiałem w to uniwersum ale wśród obrazków potworów widziałem mnóstwo inspiracji mitami Cthulhu.

Thank you. I made this work quite some time ago and still it's among my best. Reading Lovecraft for a first time was indeed a POWERFUL inspiration.

It fits the description perfectly. I absolutely adore this rendition of it. I often find myself desiring to sketch these things, as they're only portrayed with words.

After those brave men spoke the syllables that split this unnatural, abnormal hybrid THING up and sent it back to whatever ultra-cosmic pit its father wallows in, they were told that it could never have existed naturally in a sane cosmos. Only wildly evil men have -or could have -called up the forces to make its birth possible.

The ultimate purpose of investigators is to delay the return of the Great Old Ones until man has receded into the past, leaving the Earth to whatever follows man ...

I spoke to one of these things on a mushroom trip one time, lying down in the dark with my eyes closed. And that was before I'd even *heard* of Lovecraft. Which is part of the reason I find his stories so interesting today - when he describes Shoggoths, and the non-Euclidean geometry of R'lyeh, I feel like I've actually *seen* it.

I can't remember what we "spoke" about, but I do remember getting the strong impression that this creature existed a long, long way away, and was sending out the spores of Psilocybe mushrooms to other populated worlds so that it could communicate with the creatures there. All in all, a pretty unusual experience.

Interesting. I've never takien any hallucination inducing substances but I had experienced something similar though, I;ve seen in a dream some creature and later in a movie  or a book i've  found something surprisingy similar.

Perhaps Lovecraft's work touches something deep within our subconsciouness, maybe that's why it has such impact on people?

Pezkl2 In reply to KingsOfEvilArt [2013-09-16 17:31:18 +0000 UTC]

Could be. It's probably why Christianity and other religions have had such a powerful, enduring effect on humanity as well, the visions of Heaven and Hell, Gods and demons also resonate deeply with our subconscious. There's nothing more bizarre and fantastical than the human imagination. The question is, is it purely imaginary? Or are we tapping some hidden, fantastical dimension/s in our dreams and intoxicated visions?
