Maddy and Mary Sue are reluctant friends. One is a simple minded but stuck up alicorn, the other is a down to earth, but easily stressed out earth pony. Maddy educates Mary Sue while Mary Sue protects Maddy from the onslaught of the every day stresses of life. Mary Sue is oblivious as to how much Maddy actually loves her, while Maddy is annoyed at how much she actually needs Mary Sue around. She hates relying on anyone, but is learning to accept that Mary Sue has stolen the show a little, but it is still her show. Reluctantly, she shares the spot light with this alicorn who was meant to be a one off annoying character, but has now become a integral part of Maddy's life.

Yes, this pairing has certainly surprised me with how popular they have become. Their dynamic is fun to play with. They're polar opposites in every sense and there is a little bit of shunning there. But I guess they're relationship is mutually beneficial;

Maddy's cynicism and down to earth approach to life and creativity rubs off on Mary Sue, encouraging Mary Sue to ask questions and think about things more.

Mary Sue's spontaneity and energy and childlike innocence rubs off on Maddy, making her reflect on how creativity can be fun and spontaneous as well as controlled and structured.

Maddy's a little rugged and unkempt, representing the tom boy in me.

For me, Maddy represents my serious and professional perfectionist who analyzes everything, where as Mary Sue represents my passionate and emotional side. I'm not a girly girl, or at least don't consider myself to be, but I guess my feminine side is represented in Mary. Both of these characters have my temper. Neither of them are very patient or tactful.

After seeing the stage show 'Wicked' again, I made a realisation; Maddy and Mary are heavily influenced by Elphaba and Galinda's relationship!
