Description Mhiet’e of the Dhuriiehm.

Available as an print .

I painted her before, several years ago. Felt it was time to do an updated portrait. This was quite a long haul to get finished. I was working on it in the spring, but I had to set it aside because of my thesis. Was finally able to pick it up again last week when I returned from my holiday. On the plus side, I feel this is the best portrait I’ve done. I’m learning so much these days, with each new image. Everything is coming together in my head. It’s very rewarding.

Her tattoos were a nightmare. The script is an alphabet of my own invention, and spells out a poem in the accompanying language. So it’s not just random symbols; it’s legible.

Painter + Photoshop.

Gorgeous image. Really love the dark elements going on here. Also, is the background made up of thick brushstrokes and ink splats? Its a great texture.

It's a mixture of custom texture brushes and a lot of hand painting. A time-consuming technique, but worth it because it doesn't have the repetitive look of stock texture brushes.

I find your scripts interesting. Not to mention the piece. This is excellent. Would you be willing to send an image of your alphabet for me to play with? I can write in Shadow and Alteran and would like to add your alphabet to my list.

Sorry, I've spent too long developing the script to comfortably share it outside my illustrations.

So, I love the Dhuriiehm folder, but I was wondering, what exactly are the Dhuriiehm? What's the story behind this race? I also noticed a reoccurring symbol, the large one on her arm. What does that mean?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

navate In reply to emoyaoi19 [2011-07-28 06:21:38 +0000 UTC]

The Dhuriiehm are experiments, essentially... an attempt at creating super warriors by cobbling together bits of different magical creatures within a humanoid body. Each attempt was a crapshoot and very few of the Dhuriiehm turned out as planned; I'm not sure I'd call them a race. There are only a couple dozen of them.

The symbol is the Dhuriiehm insigna/seal.

This was your first painting that I happened upon browsing one day, and it quite literally took my breath away. Your attention to detail is truly remarkable, and I'm continually impressed that you are in the process of building your own language. May I ask if it has an influence from current languages or is it wholly a product of your imagination?

Lovely work, as are all the pieces in your gallery. I look forward to seeing more!

I basically pick and choose what I find beautiful... in terms of the lettering, I was influenced by Arabic, Sanskrit, and kanji. When I was a teen first making it up, the script was basically elvish looking English letters (yearg) but it matured as I did, I guess. Now it's definitely it's own animal.

Well, you chose wonderfully. The language is quite beautiful--something I would love to learn one day.

Every time I look at the writing on her arms, I always wonder: what's the poem say? If I even knew what your alphabet was, I'd be sorely tempted to have it printed on my own flesh.

amazing skills.
and such unique,and interesting work.
do you ever use references,or always use your imagination?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

navate In reply to Antrophy [2010-07-22 02:47:12 +0000 UTC]

I use both! It is important to use references as a help or guide, rather than copying them exactly. This way, I am free to paint any kind of pose or character I imagine, but am able to keep it realistic by referring to the real world too. I also do many studies etc to keep my skills sharp.

Some of your portraits remind me of Brom, concerning colors, poses, enigmas and the strong personality of the characters. A compliment to your art, I would love to see it in big size and made by oils! (the smell of paint is an additional feeling to the work that digital art can´t bring, but is magic otherwise).

I like your speccific climate, I rarelly feel that kind of feelings watching typical fantasy art. Your artworks are very delicate and subtle, but simultaneusly poetic, upsetting and personally a little dark. see my gallery, I think you will like especially my warhammer paintings.

Your characters truly are amazing, so are your painting style. I always get fascinated by it, so unique and beautiful and... deep.

The poem tatoos of your own alphabet is pretty stunning. Like, getting the letters all so crisp and of the same size and 'rofessional tatoo-looking', must've been a huge job. Great work on it.

Her face too amazes me a lot, because it seems so real in a way, like, not just a painting on a computer screen, but a real person with a soul. I ask myself what she's thinking about, but she's all so mysterious, so I have no answer... Maybe you do?
Her outift it brilliant too.

So, awesome work on this, I always become so happy when I see you post a new artwork

too bad, but with the art theives rampant on the internet its probably a good idea. (not that my whims are of any concern but..) id love to see more of these people. theyre facinating. i had 'the bloody' saved in my devwatch inbox for a while, and some people asked about it, and why i would keep it around, but your characters are absolutely facinating.

This is such a beautiful portrait. Your characters always feel to real and alive, and she is no exception. The poem tattoo is a crazy amount of effort, but adds a lot to the character.

May I ask why her eyes are partially black?

Very nice. Love the crow's wing hat. I would like to see an alphabet of that script, it's very beautiful. It's like a cross between Arabic and JRRTolkien's elvish script.
