Description My first elementary concept since August (crazy exam schedules and coursework deadlines have kept me plenty busy). A simple writing application. The top bar is static and used for document wide actions, like open, save, print and document properties, as well as an undo and redo button. The second bar is dynamic, the buttons changing depending on the content selected. The top bar is for text editing, the second for image properties and the third for tables. In this way only the functions needed are seen at any one time, but could still be searchable by something like Unity's HUD.

I have actually worked on creating this concept. The project is built HTML, CSS, and CoffeeScript. If anyone is interested in seeing this concept in action, check out this demo .Β It is still in heavy development so not all features will work as expected but can be used at the moment to create a simple PDF.

I'm working on it here: launchpad.net/writer
Just download the latest code (with bzr) and run the run.sh script from the scripts directory.
If you don't know how to do this, you probably shouldn't

Will this be developed from scratched or branched from/based around OpenOffice/LibreOffice?

Also, Do you have an SVG for that?

I'm working on the code to make this a reality (launchpad.net/writer) , but I could use a mockup of the popovers for the paragraph, font, insert ... buttons.
Could you do this? That would help us very much!

man, You're doing right thing. Unix has nothing like that (except GWOffice, but it requires Internet so...)
Please, don't leave the project - make him come true.

Wow, this is great. I'd love to build something like this, I'm sure it would be a great way of expanding my knowledge of Vala. I just know that it will probably fall short of the excellence shown in these design impressions...

You was speacking aboud the HUD of unity for the global search fuction. Why not add a button on the top bar ? So it can works whis all systems.

Looking super sexy. I would like to see less vertical height on that secondary toolbar if possible, though.

Also is there a reason the "Insert" menu is in the text context rather than in the main toolbar?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

spiceofdesign In reply to DanRabbit [2013-02-03 10:24:50 +0000 UTC]

The secondary toolbar applies to the specific place in the document, whereas the top bar refers to the document as a whole. When you insert something you don't pick what you want to insert then where you want to insert. Also it would be used for inserting references, which is something that another commenter asked about.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DanRabbit In reply to spiceofdesign [2013-02-03 18:07:05 +0000 UTC]

Ah that makes sense. I was coming from the thinking of finding a context in which "insert" didn't make sense.

I wish Abiword would be like this!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

CopperBezel In reply to Amodef [2013-02-10 00:48:45 +0000 UTC]

Abiword's problems really aren't a matter of interface. It's surprisingly not painfully cluttered, if it's perhaps also missing most of the features that come in those secondary toolbars here.

CopperBezel [2013-02-01 06:57:14 +0000 UTC]

I really like the idea of a simple, dedicated word processor that doesn't need to be a part of an office suite. This seems a lot more attractive than something like LibreOffice for home use and especially for students. The dynamic toolbar really is very unique and clever, and a HUD-like feature would make up for possible limitations with that approach. How would the toolbar respond to resizing the window down - or would the window have a fairly high minimum width?

It'd be really neat for something like this to have an always-saved operation style and possibly support automatic versions, although that could probably become complicated.

I wonder if anyone is going to make it. This would be awesome to include in an elementary Office suite or something.

I have started on a new presentation concept, and will probably create a spreadsheet application too.

It would be super nice to have something like this, since I currently rely on google docs since all the linux offerings are so bad.

simplygreat [2013-01-31 03:09:38 +0000 UTC]

Fantastic work!

The dynamic-toolbar concept shown in your mockup is just a brilliant idea. I still don't get why all the text editors keep all the controls visible even when not all of them are useful to the object selected (the "underline" button is visible and enabled in LibreOffice when a picture is selected, for instance).

This is both beautiful and functional; from the UX point of view, it just makes sense.

Advanced features could probably be placed into a sidebar, with a content-sensitive behavior as well.
