James hadn't competed internationally for well over a decade, and never with Vermeer. When he was teaching full time, there was never the opportunity or the reason; the occasional local polo weekend was about all he managed, and he'd rarely come home with any prizes to show for it. Because of this, when Rosa asked that he book Vermeer in for the Lights on the Beach show, he thought she was joking and let out a bit of a quiet chuckle. When her stern face didn't change into a smile, he realised there wasn't any jokes involved. A few of the students were booked in, and they'd all been expressing their excitement about location for the last few weeks. The girls had been constantly posting photos of their costumes, and even Oliver was planning some bright coloured set-up for Caffeinate.
"The girls have really started to look up to you- I can't expect them to get off their rears and out competing seriously if their instructor never does the same. It'll be a good chance to set an example."
That was partially what he was worried about. Vermeer was a very talented dressage horse, but he was used to strutting around the training arena in the peace and quiet of the stables, and he'd barely seen competition outside of the occasional local show. He hoped that his polo experience would be enough to keep his nerves together with the lights and noise at the show, and agreed to come along.

He was regretting it a little now, walking the anxious stallion around in circles, trying to keep the mud and dust off of his hooves while they waited impatiently for their turn.
The pair were dressed the part for the event: Little gemstone anklets dangled around Vermeer's pasterns. On his bridle, a carefully chose scallop shell and a few faux pearls highlighted his big white blaze. Over his back, a rope "fish net" style cape hung, glittering with small plastic gems. It seemed a good idea at the time but now little beads of sweaty foam were forming under the bands of rope, threatening to ruin the hard work James had put into his grooming. The two had been used to the cool of winter back in Australia. The short quarantine period hadn't quite got them acclimatised yet, and the horse wasn't the only one starting to sweat.
