Vicky alternated feeding Jessica and eating her own pizza, and it wasn't particularly easy for Jessica to eat with her head held in place by her cast. Jessica's mood improved a bit after a few slices of pizza, but Vicky could see a pensive distant look in her eyes.

"How are you doing?"

"I'm okay. I really appreciate this -- I don't think I've said it enough -- I'm just thinking of what the next month is going to be like."

"I'm happy to help with anything I can, and I mean anything ... and yeah, it sucks that they didn't even let you prepare for this."

😔 "You're telling me ... though honestly I don't know what I would have done even if I knew about this ahead of time, I still wouldn't be able to feed myself, dress myself, ..."

Jessica mentally listed a few other things she could no longer do for herself which were even more 'intimate', and decided that a restaurant was not the best place to continue that line of conversation. She looked down at the plate and saw one more piece of pizza which Vicky seemed to be in no hurry to eat.

"Want to split that last piece?"

"No, it's all yours, I've had more to eat than you today, and ..."

Vicky trailed off as she stared at the rigid purple shell encasing Jessica's arms and upper body. '... and I won't need help to eat something else if I change my mind', she thought.

"Can you give me just one more bite? I'm actually getting pretty full."

"Okay, here you go- crap! 😨 Uh, let me clean that up, I'm so sorry!"

Jessica smiled slightly as Vicky fumbled for a napkin, then frantically wiped tomato sauce from the front rim of her cast, right below her mouth. Vicky seemed to be panicking, and Jessica waited a few seconds before calming her down.

"It's fine, it's not like I want this thing to get dirty, but I get the feeling that's going to be hard to avoid."

😥 "I'm really sorry, I-"

"Listen, I have no problem telling you if I'm not okay, it's not a big deal 😛"

Vicky walked Jessica home, got her into her apartment, and held her steady while she alternated balancing on each foot to slip her shoes off.

"Oh, I guess I could have just sat down for that -- oops! 😅"

"Hah, yeah, I'm sure you have a lot to get used to."

Vicky nervously looked away, not wanting to give any indication that she had enjoyed the feeling of holding Jessica's casted wrists, or that she had experimented with trying to pull Jessica's hands together while her friend was focusing on slipping her shoes off. Vicky was still processing how it must feel for Jessica to have absolutely no movement in her arms and upper body, when Jessica interrupted her train of thought.

"Hey, um ... 😒 can I ask you a big favor?"

"Yeah, of course!"

"Any chance you can help me use the bathroom? I'm supposed to get a call to set up visits from a home health service some time soon, but I don't know when that's going to be ..."

"Absolutely, say no more."

Vicky's heart was racing as she knelt down to undress Jessica. She knew intellectually that Jessica's body cast wasn't removable, that her friend had to spend 24 hours a day immobilized and helpless. It was entirely different to see exactly how much independence Jessica had lost, how the cast afforded her almost no privacy or control over herself.

I'm happy to get back to Jessica's story -- I have a few immediate follow-ups in the works with her and Vicky, some of which are just waiting for fully-rendered images 😃
