Description
Our Lady of Good Counsel
April 28th 2012
Watercolor and Ink
7.5 inches by 11 inches

"I am the Mother of fair love, of reverence,
and of knowledge, and of holy hope.
In me is all grace of the way and of the truth,
in me is all hope of life and of virtue.
Approach me, you who desire me,
and take your fill of my fruits."
~ Sirach 24:17-19

"And now my children, listen to me;
listen to instruction and learn to be wise.
Happy are those who keep my ways,
who day after day watch at my gates.
For those who find me find life
and win favor from the LORD."
~ Proverbs 8:32-35

So this is the first of a series of Madonnas I am planning on making, so stay tuned for those; I'll be getting them out by Feast Day. This one is two days late, since the Feast of Our Mother of Good Counsel is on the 26th of April, but oh well. I also had my Finals that day, so there's a reason it didn't get done. This one also took quite a long time to do; for the longest time Mary and Jesus' faces just would not cooperate. I eventually got Mary's face to something I was somewhat happy with, but for Jesus I just ended up using a picture of my niece Gianna for him (at least he looks cute, right?).

The history behind this particular image can be found here: [link] but I'll give a summarized account. In the little Italian town of Genazzano, there was an old church dedicated to Our Lady of Good Counsel that had fallen into ruins. Around the 1440s, a widow named Petruccia used all of her money to try and restore the church, while the other townspeople scoffed at her for wasting her money on it. Now, one year, on the feast of St. Mark (the 25th of April), the town's patron, they held a faire in his honor in the town square where the church was. Towards evening, a luminous cloud suddenly descended on the church and the picture of Our Lady of Good Counsel appeared on the wall there.

I used this picture as a reference: [link]

I believe this fresco is the original image of Our Lady of Good counsel: [link]

Prayer to Our Lady of Good Counsel

Most Glorious Virgin, chosen by the Eternal Counsel to be the Mother of the Eternal Word made flesh, thou who art the treasurer of Divine graces, and the advocate of sinners, I, thy most unworthy servant, have recourse to thee; be thou pleased to be my guide and counselor in this vale of tears. Obtain for me through the Most Precious Blood of thy Divine Son, the forgiveness of my sins, the salvation of my soul, and the means necessary to obtain it. In like manner, obtain for Holy Mother the Church victory over her enemies, and the spread of the kingdom of Jesus Christ upon the whole earth. Amen.

The Feast of Our Lady of Good Counsel is April 26th.

I could never give you a gift this season that would appropriately thank you for creating such innumerable beautiful art pieces you've given to this world, so I hope that a watch will serve adequately as a thank you from me to you! Merry Christmas and a Happy New year.

Yeah, I feel you. I've kinda been sick for the past couple weeks too. That time of year. But it's been great to hang out with the family, though sadly, this week everyone is going back to school and work.

Well if it's any consolation, I graduated lol so if you don't mind my ramblings, I'm always around! And I suppose you're right about it being that time of year. I'm living in Florida and it still got down to 20 degrees last night!

Yeah, I live in the midwest and it's been cold, like 10-20 in the daytime. Hurray for electric blankets.

I've always wanted one of those! lol but I've never actually had one! My folks always chastised them as being fire hazards. Perhaps I may have to look into that for myself!

I've had one for years and they're perfectly safe (and make the winter bearable!). I doubt manufacturers would make one with settings so high that they'd set things on fire, especially these days.

lol yeah something tells me the "Burn down your house and home" setting wouldn't be a very popular one on the market.

That passage from Sirach 24 is about The Spirit of Wisdom

Β FYI.

But has also been interpreted to being about Mary.

Scripture has four senses in which it can be interpreted. There is the literal, the allegorical, the moral (tropological), and the anagogic (or sometimes what's called the Eschatological)Β sense. Scripture has been interpreted in those senses since the beginning, but it was John Cassian (an early Church Father who lived from 360 til 435) who gave them this classical division. As an example illustrating the different senses he wrote in his Conferences:Β Β β€œThe one Jerusalem can be understood inΒ four different ways, in the historical sense as the city of theΒ Jews, in allegory as the Church of Christ, in anagoge as theΒ heavenly city of God β€˜which is the mother of us all’ (GalΒ 4:26), in the tropological sense as the human soul.”

So in this way, that passage from Sirach can be literally or historically understood as referring to God the Son as the Word and Wisdom of the Father, but in the allegorical sense as relating to Mary.Β

I have a particular soft spot for Our Lady of Good Counsel, as it's on her Feast day a couple of years ago that I started working in the Convent I work in. (and we have a Sr there whose name in Religion is Consili, and she was so tickled that I started on her FD.) This is beautiful, and I must show it to her at some point, as she loves art...

It's lovely going through your gallery, and seeing how you've developed your skills. Some of your work really reminds me of Sr M. Clare Augustine, one of the original Mercy Sisters, who was an illuminator, and reckoned to be the best in Europe at her time (she was working in the 1830s-50s).

Wow, that's really awesome! Thank you so much for your lovely compliments.

I just looked her up (having never heard of her before) but I couldn't seem to find too many of her illustrations. Do you know where I could find them?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Shedara In reply to Theophilia [2012-05-30 15:51:39 +0000 UTC]

I know, there's hardly any on the net, which I find really odd - I hadn't realised just how few until just now, when I went looking! The mercyworld.org website's shop used to have better photos - the ones now are tiny, and really don't do the intricacy of her work justice, at all.

[link] is a half decent quality photo and [link] has a selection of paintings by her, and I think the sketch drawings are hers too. She's quite unusual in that one painting will be so traditional for her period in time, and yet the next one will be something that wouldn't be out of place today...

The only other thing I can recommend, is the book of her work Opening our Treasures - it's a small book, but every page is an absolute jewel. I had loan of a copy belonging to my Sponsor, and I keep meaning to get my own copy. it does cost 7euro, and I've no idea what that is in dollars (it's about Β£5 sterling, which isn't bad for what it is). It's possible that one of the American Mercy Congregations might sell them too...

Sorry to be of such little help!

my pleasure - and here's another, (but you need flash on your computer to play it)
[link] - it's more the flower side of Sr M.Clare Augustine's work, but it does show her talent!

HAHAHHAHAHHAHA!!!! Yes, yes it is, most unfortunately. It's such a pity that the most beautiful Child Who ever lived is so often drawn...looking like a creepy old man. I want to see more cute Baby Jesus'! It does help that Gianna is ridiculously cute too. She sends me into raptures and squeals of joy everytime I see her. SHE'S SO CUTE!!!

You know, I understand that it's difficult to draw babies, but I don't get why so many people throughout the centuries have (unintentionally, I would guess) depicted Baby Jesus as an old man. Is there some kind of resemblance between the two that I've just never noticed before or what?
