"Madonna of the Veil"
December 25th-26th, 2009
Pencil, watercolors

Merry Christmas everyone!!!!

Here's my Christmas picture, I was working on it yesterday, but I didn't finish until this morning. It's late for Christmas day, but not for the Octave of Christmas!

There's not much to say about this one, I don't think, except that every part of it was a pain to do. I probably just was not in a drawing mood, but I wanted to make something for Christmas. Anyway, it was a struggle to do; the poses were just working, or the hands or the veils, or wrinkles or faces... The drawing and sketching part of this picture took far longer than it took to paint it. I'm still not happy with the hands, and I don't know what that veil is doing back there... *sigh* I hope you enjoy.

The veil is supposed to be a reminder of the Humeral Veil that the prist uses during Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. Instead of touching the monstrance he wrapped his hands in the veil so he doesn't touch it and then blesses the people with the Eucharist.

Yay for cute baby Jesus sucking his thumb!

By the way, quality isn't the best because this is too big for my scanner. So I just had to take a picture of it.

Lo, how a Rose e’er blooming from tender stem hath sprung!
Of Jesse’s lineage coming, as men of old have sung.
It came, a floweret bright, amid the cold of winter,
When half spent was the night.

Isaiah ’twas foretold it, the Rose I have in mind;
With Mary we behold it, the virgin mother kind.
To show God’s love aright, she bore to men a Savior,
When half spent was the night.

The shepherds heard the story proclaimed by angels bright,
How Christ, the Lord of glory was born on earth this night.
To Bethlehem they sped and in the manger found Him,
As angel heralds said.

This Flower, whose fragrance tender with sweetness fills the air,
Dispels with glorious splendor the darkness everywhere;
True Man, yet very God, from sin and death He saves us,
And lightens every load.

O Savior, Child of Mary, who felt our human woe,
O Savior, King of glory, who dost our weakness know;
Bring us at length we pray, to the bright courts of Heaven,
And to the endless day!

I like the image and concept...but, may I
suggest that you give
yourself a different
kind of space within
which to "move" the
lines of your piece...
such as a cirle or oval
instead of the rectangle.
I have the feeling that
the shape of your space
cramped your style and
vision and movement flow
for this piece.

Yeah, you're right. I didn't really think about it but yeah, it did kind of get crowded in there and I didn't have the space I need to do what I wanted to.

In reflecting on Jesus' humanity, it's always amusing to consider all of those little things which any normal human baby would do, including sucking his thumb and so I like seeing that in this picture. Of course, you would then need to change our Lady's expression to one of "Now, Jesus, smile for the nice painter lady."

Merry Christmas!

I love baby Jesus, and you're so right, I think it is very sweet to see the Christ Child acting like, well, a child! Playing on the floor, sucking his thumb, laughing, crying, snuggling up to His Mommy...

I know, I love it too. It's so pretty! I also really like "What is this Lovely Fragrance" Well, I love tons of Christmas songs. Heheh, currently I'm listening to Good King Wenceslas (since it's the feast of Stephen. )

"My dad's a deacon so he's really excited about this feast. "

Hmm... I wonder why?

Now please explain this to me: how is your dad a deacon? I thought it was the discipline of the Latin Rite for all who enter into Holy Orders to remain celibate.

Theophilia In reply to ThatOneGuy92 [2009-12-26 20:29:29 +0000 UTC]

Heheh.

Funnily enough, we were just having a discussion about this last night.

Well, if a man is already married and is becoming a deacon, then he obviously gets to keep his wife. Only priests and unmarried men who are becoming permamnent deacons are required to take a vow of celibacy when they're making their vows to the bishop. The married men of course, don't. (They still take the vows of obedience to the bishop) But if their spouse dies then they can't marry again. That's often why bishops will be cautious when men are discerning for the deaconate if they have any younger children, because they don't want the deaconate to be a burden on the men or their families since their first responsibility and obligation is to their families. I hope that explains it.

ThatOneGuy92 In reply to Theophilia [2009-12-28 23:30:47 +0000 UTC]

I completely understand that. However (and perhaps this is my Lutheranism showing), I don't understand why the same can't be applied for with priests. From Church History, one finds there were many married deacons, priests, and even a few bishops. Why cannot it be that priests too, if married before receiving Holy Orders, can be ordained into the the priesthood? As is the custom of the Ancient Church and the Eastern Communions.

I know, I know- I am asking a question I sort of know the answer to. I am quite familiar with the reasoning behind a celibate priesthood (and therefore episcopate); however, hearing an answer from someone who actaully lives and breates these realities is IMHO a slight bit more enlightening than a book.

Blessed Feast of the Holy Innocents to you!

It's just a custom in the Roman Rite, it could be changed, I suppose the Pope and the bishops just haven't seen the need to change it.

And same to you. (By the way, I really like that blog by that lutheran pastor you showed me. Very cool, and the guy is really, really insightful. Again, thanks for the link. )

"It's just a custom in the Roman Rite, it could be changed, I suppose the Pope and the bishops just haven't seen the need to change it."

Thanks. And indeed, they do change it in a fashion- they make exceptions when a married Protestant pastor comes into the RCC, and wishes to become a priest.

Glad you liked Fr. Weedon's blog. He is an extrememely insightful pastor, and his knowledge of Church History (and therefore doctrine) is astounding. He is someone I seek to emulate.

Plus, he puts up his sermons to boot, which is REALLY nice

Right. You probably already knew the answer to that anyway, and my answer was rather simplistic.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ThatOneGuy92 In reply to Theophilia [2009-12-29 19:18:58 +0000 UTC]

I admit- I did kinda know the answer. However, we always have to be reminded of things- even things we know. Plus, I cannot say anything except what I've read on the subject- you, however, can attest to it, because you've experienced it. Although, seperating experience from objective reality is a dangerous thing to do... ah! NO! Bad Tim, bad Tim. No random philosophical ponderings on someone's Deviantart
