The Gladius-class Medium Cruiser was a class of capital-ship used by the former Imperial Remnant faction, the Galactic Remnant. Entering development in late 20 ABY (After the Battle of Yavin), the Gladius-class was to be the first domestically produced capital-ship of the Galactic Remnant who up to this point, was forced to rely on their aging fleet of Royal-class , and Victory-class  light star destroyers. Development ended around 23 ABY, and the ship entered service around 24 ABY with the first production models coming out of the shipyards the following year.

The Gladius-class Medium Cruiser would go on to make a name for its self as the "relentless brick". This was thanks to the ship's impressive main, and secondary armament as well as its thick hull plating, and sturdy shields. However, the ship was known as a "brick" as due to New Republic regulations, the ship was to be essentially just a maneuverable space station. It was to be deployed to key areas, and sit there as its guard dog. Due to this, the ship had a slow sublight, and hyperspace speed with these mostly being there to help deploy and re-deploy the ship. Further restrictions placed upon the Galactic Remnant was the number of these ships they were allowed to build. A total of around 512 ships were allowed to be in service at any given time(8 ships for every inhabited worlds occupied by the Galactic Remnant).

While these restriction were put into place because the New Republic feared a resurgent of Imperial power if the Galactic Remnant (and more specifically, its military) was left unchecked. These restrictions only served to create a divide between the Galactic Remnant and the New Republics that would last until the New Republic's destruction in 34 ABY.
