Description This is done from the same series of photos I used for the Anima painting. I think I might actually be happier with the charcoal... Did it while listening to the Celtic myths podshow, maybe that helped? I get lost in all the Gaelic names...

Anyway, this is charcoal and white chalk on toned paper, 50x70 cm.

This is so beautiful, I love the lighting its so delicate, and the crisp folds of her dress, and the way she blends into the darkness. Great work.

Beautiful! I love the charcoal and chalk too. From a distance, it looks like an old, sepia-toned photograph, but, up-close, you can see so much texture and detail. Really gorgeous work, I'm so glad you posted this!

Funny you should mention the Celtic podcast (I'm going to have to check that out, by the way) because, last night - and it must have been round about the time you posted this - I was reading Yeats's poem 'The Wanderings of Oisin' and my head was full of Gaelic names too!

Thank you old looking is always a good sign as far as I'm concerned

I don't know if it's harder because I'm French (although we have Celtic people in Brittany), but I get all the names mixed up so easily. It would be easier if I read them actually, but focusing on the drawing and listening at the same time, I keep having to rewind to listen again. There are just so many of them! haha. But they sort of role play the characters, and it's very entertaining. For a while they even had quite strong Irish accents which I absolutely loved but some listeners didn't like it so they had to tone it down. Boring!

I should read The wanderings of Oisin, I just looked it up, it looks right up my alley. Pretty long, so I will have to do it at the right time - I still have trouble with poetry. I think it's probably the hardest thing in a foreign language... Harder for words to be really evocative when they aren't a natural part of you. Well, give me twenty years and maybe they will!

Lol, I find the Wanderings of Oisin difficult, and I'm a native English speaker! But the meaning isn't so much fun as the sound of the poem (I'm always trying to read poetry out loud to anyone who will listen! ) I think, even if you didn't understand everything (and I'm sure you would, because your English seems perfect to me) you would still enjoy it.

I find the Gaelic names difficult even when I see them written down. Niamh and Siobhen (pronounced Neeve and Shevorn! They confuse me to no end! ) But that Gaelic podcast sounds like so much fun - I must find it!

This looks so realistic and beautiful. The charcoal gives it a nice touch. The lighting is superb! And there is a lot of expression in the face.
My mom gets those Celtic Music podcasts on her I-pod. They sound pretty good, except when the podcast is an hour long. Then it's just annoying...

Thank you!! I'm glad you like it. Yep, I love Celtic music but it can get a bit repetitive. Although right now I'm kind of addicted to it. But I don't force other people to listen to it for hours on end

I love your use of negative space... the light and shadows. I think window light is one of the most romantic artistic expression... very beautiful, and also nostalgic. The most beautiful thing is the light that light part of you!

Beautiful!

Thank you so much!! I've been trying to use negative space in an effective way, I'm slowly getting there... Then my mum comes around and says "but why is there so much space over there?" thanks mum!

I love clair obscur, and windows are indeed great for that... This kind of light can give such a nice atmosphere...

Beautiful. I think I like this one a bit better too, and I'm not sure why. It seems to just... 'speak' more, somehow...

thank you I think this pose made emotion easier to pull off although the other one was more about mystery... But oil is also a lot harder than charcoal!
