Description My sister as I perceive her. She is pisces indeed. Not that I believe in astrology but I like the symbolism of it and in her case it reflects her character well.

Water, the feminine side of us, the unconscious... That's what interests me

Also experimenting with gold leaf a bit, still can't handle it very well but I like the effect. Full view is of course recommended

oil and gold leaf on canvas, 60x120cm

Beautiful. The face is so well rendered and then I love how the rest of her blends into the surrounding. The lighting gives the painting such a magical feeling.

Beautiful work. The blues and golds (I hope I am not mistaken when I think they are complementary)... I specially love the headscarf... and the blue you used (is this maybe cobalt blue?) And you can see the gold ! I love the little gold flowers...

I love the tecnique and school you have... do you think you could do a step by step someday... I just got Elliott`s and Aristides Classical and traditional oil painting books... I do still believe I can learn... I hope!

Thank you for sharing...

I started a new painting this week and have been taking photos for a step by step the photos might not be great but I think you will get the gist of it. I'm going away for a week on saturday but hopefully it will be online by the end of August or beginning of Septembre.

I did use cobalt blue for this mainly (and a bit of cerulean), you have a good eye! I'm happy you mention the little flowers, I was very pleased with them they really glow when there isn't much light on the canvas.

thank you for all the encouragements you give me

I really really want to learn to paint this way, I know it takes a long long time to learn, but I am willing to give it a try. I really love how you paint!

And the blues you used are beautiful. The Chiarobscuro is just amazing! Incredible work!!!

Aaah, you always flatter me so much I've been taking photos of the painting I'm working on now to do a step by step since you said you would like to see one. I don't know if it will be very useful since the process can be somewhat erratic and change from painting to painting but there are some rules that need to be respected... Mh, well, even that's not quite sure at least some rules that do help. Though often it's the kind of thing you don't quite get until you've been doing it for a while and one day it just clicks. It was like that for me at school and now I think "how the hell didn't I get it for so long when the teachers were repeating it to me constantly? it's so obvious!" but yeah, it's not

Nothing is obvious in life Helene. I think we need to practice and actually make mistakes to learn, but well, I will be waiting for those amazing wips of yours... I really am struggling without a teacher now, but I guess it`s a challenge to see if I really want to do this... -sighs-

Love
V.

Reminiscent of the old masters, this is a very moving portrait, the love for your sister shows in your work. Very nicely done.

This is absolutely breathtaking. So magical. I will definitely be faving it at my other account. The colors, the composition, the use of the gold leaf - all of it is just amazing. Someday I will be rich enough to commission you to do a portrait, and that will be a happy day for me, indeed. But, until then, I will just have to keep enjoying your work, which I do with great pleasure.

thank you so much ! I'm glad my painting can add a touch of sun (or moon) to somebody's day I wish I could show the painting as it is in real life but it'd be a bit difficult...

Who knows maybe in a few years I'll paint your portrait that would be an interesting one I think

I would LOVE that. I really would love to commission you someday, actually. You should note me when you have a chance to just give me an idea of your prices. I'm sure they are far beyond my current budget, but I would at least know what to save up for .

Wow, this is beautiful! I like especially the composition, how the larger light shape of the head is perfectly balanced out by the smaller, (still) light shape of the hands. Your painting technique is becoming better and better!

Where exactly did you use the gold leaf, in the small light-dots in the background? I've always liked medieval paintings with lots of gold leaf in them (and Florence sure has no shortage of wonderful medieval artwork to gawk at); they have a somewhat etheral quality. Personally I've been too chicken to ever use gold leaf in my traditional work. Any chance you could show me how to use it, some day? That would be awesome!

I'm guessing you're still waiting for a reply from Turid, it can take a while. But maybe we'll meet in Norway soon!

Hey ! Thanks for the compliments!

There is also gold leaf on the headscarf, but you see it more or less depending on the light. I can show you what I know but I still tend to mess it up myself most of the time, haha! It would be fun though (it's so bloody sticky!! and my hair has wayy too much static electricity!)

God, I love medieval stuff so much. It doesn't show much in my paintings yet, more in my doodles (somehow it always seem easier to experiment in a sketchbook than on a 1 meter painting...), but I believe the influence is growing stronger and stronger.

I actually met up with Odd and Turid who strangely enough were in Lille for one day! We went to the museum and had lunch. They had their two daughters with them. People had told me about Odd a bit but he REALLY is the caricature of the old artist... Haha. Such an intense guy. I'm not quite sure what to do about September though, as Turid told me they're going away from the 8th till the 20th for the Kitsch biennale in Venice. So I can come but it won't be as good as if they were there for the whole time. But then in October all my clubs start again (namely : Japanese, engraving, figure drawing which I haven't done this year, and maybe an astronomy class every other week )... Aaaaah I don't know what to do
