Description Fixed myself a new icon, what do you guys think?

It's quite similar to the last one, except of course for the fact that this one is a magpie and not just some anonymous black bird.

I'm still not quite satisfied with the tail though... What do you guys think? Is it bothersome?

------

EDIT: More frames, faster framerate and less tailsweep. I think it looks better now

Haha oh yeah, that's true! Although I have less scientific motivations, I'm sure XP

this is so cool! I like magpies, although I've been swooped a few times XD -not fun, let me tell you. But this animation is just so smooth and finished, I love it!

Swooped? Oh, you're Australian? I heard about the swooping season, so freaky. I couldn't even imagine having to watch out for birds.
The magpies we have here, black billed magpies, corvids, are actually super shy. The ones in the city are okay but the others fly at the slightest disturbance. You can barely get close, a shame, truly.

Engavar In reply to drosera-sundews [2015-01-30 00:29:13 +0000 UTC]

yeah, well magpies only swoop you if they're protecting their babies, but unfortunately, I just happened to be mucking around under a tree with a magpie nest.... oops.
They're not that bad, and it barely ever happens.  Plus magpies have beautiful calls.
But yes, most birds are incredibly shy, bar pidgeons and the odd magpie.  sometimes if you're really quiet though, and you stay still for a while, they won't notice you're there.  I love cockatoos the most, such beautiful fliers

this is so incredibly amazing. I already thought the previous one was amazing, but this one is just beautiful. I think you've done amazing with the frames there is not a single part that seems to be glitchy. I also think you've done great with the depth of the front wing and the wing on the background, you can clearly mention which one is front and which one is back. The background is amazing it really seems like a lightsource on it's own, you made the ligthest part really the lightest and that's something to be proud off.

Thank you so much ^^ Funny that it's so specifically the background you admire, while that was by far the easiest part of it all. Also the only not-moving part.

Hey but, just a question. I'm experimenting a bit with run-cycles lately and since I still own you a request, would you maybe like having an animated icon?

Since you don't animate yourself. Although I can also imagine that you wouldn't want to go around wearing someone else's artwork.

You're welcome, that's not what I wanted to make clear; I was mainly giving compliments about the magpie's animation, but whatever you've done great on both though.
Ooh yes that's actually a really great idea!!!
Btw. I don't mind having an icon not made by myself

I love the feathers and all the colors! I think the colors really helps to set it apart from your other black bird, and I personally enjoy the flow of the tail. Either way, it looks really great!

of-the-skies [2013-11-26 00:04:02 +0000 UTC]

i think the tail coul be a bit stiffer, because real feathers are straighter. But if you were aiming for a more fantasy look, it siuts the animation really well!

And maybe the framerate should be faster

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

drosera-sundews In reply to of-the-skies [2013-11-26 11:13:43 +0000 UTC]

DO you really think so! Great! I was actually going to add more frames, once I got the tail right that is

I did try it with a stiff tail, but despite looking more natural, it also looked more, well, stiff. So I think the final one will be at last somewhat flowy ^^

Demon-Works [2013-11-25 23:28:49 +0000 UTC]

Maybe if the tail didn't move forward so much and it moved back a little more.

Gewalgon [2013-11-25 22:33:08 +0000 UTC]

Wow, that's beautiful!
The tail and its animation looks fine to me
I would make the animation of the magpie just a bit faster, I think this way his movement would look more natural.

Thank you so much dear

I will make it faster eventually, once I've got the tail right I'll add more frames inbetween. Might take a while though...

First

Just saying this is lovely and amazing

I don't think the whole picture is bothersome. If you wanted to improve the tail, you could make sure that it feels more flow-y, like the tail having an additional curve towards other direction, if you get what I mean. Something which would heavily express the magpie's important property, the colorful tail.

drosera-sundews In reply to VisionCrow [2013-11-26 11:06:40 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so much

Hm, that's kind of hard XD some people think the tail is all right, some say it should be stiffer to make it realistic, and now you say it should be more flowy.

Haha, that's what's so terrible about animating, I suppose. Everyone can tell that there's something wrong, but how to fix it? No one's sure.

I think I'll give more flowy a try though, I definitely do like what that looks like Thanks

VisionCrow In reply to drosera-sundews [2013-11-27 13:46:32 +0000 UTC]

I see the others have given you a palette of choices. That's kind.

Much will depend on what do you seek. Magpies do have stiff tails, so if they waved their tails in the nature, the tails wouldn't move a lot (I admit I didn't think of this until you replied). Even so, animations often skew much of the rules of realism in order to look better. Just think of any of the popular 2D animation shows, and you'd be hard-pressed to find complete realism.

Everything will always have "something wrong", and when you'll fix it, it becomes "worse" for the other one. Sometimes there are flaws which could be made better for everyone, but sometimes suggestions are more like opinions. Thus why developing an unique style you like is important, and not to listen to everyone.

Then of course, telling you how to fix something is much harder, as it requires some more skill. And even so, they may not always be right, so it's important to be critical while respectful. I suppose you could try to ask them for further clarification, like "what should I do to fix it in the way you mentioned"? Perhaps they'd be able to answer, and you'd get something practical.

I think the v.2 is better. Fast birds are awesome

drosera-sundews In reply to VisionCrow [2013-11-27 19:50:20 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I suppose real magpies indeed don't wag their tail like that. That might be a bit of dragon influence from my side, heh.

hm, but I don't like the look of non-moving parts in animations, and after all, this is art.

I wonder if asking for further clarification is going to help. For as far as I know non of my current watchers frequently animates (besides the occasional pixel art). Could just be me though.

VisionCrow In reply to drosera-sundews [2013-11-27 22:14:46 +0000 UTC]

I believe your influences make sure you are drawing in the style you like to draw. So you are nevertheless aiming for the "correct direction", they way you want.

Ah, I see your point. Likely your thoughts are correct, as someone who has experience in animating (even just a little bit) is better able to instruct you over things in animation you do not yet know.

Foxofwonders [2013-11-25 20:49:48 +0000 UTC]

It could be just me, but the animation of your old icon looks much more smooth. I do love magpies though. xD

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

drosera-sundews In reply to Foxofwonders [2013-11-26 10:04:53 +0000 UTC]

Thanks Yeah I noticed. I wasn't sure how much frames that one was and I don't have the file anymore. So I played it save with the magpie and used only 10 frames.

Hmm, looking back I think more frames would have been nicer, I hope I can still put in some extra without making the file to big.
