Costume test for Seraphei.One of my primary feathers on the right wing (left in picture) broke not 5 minutes before this shot, and I couldn't fix it. Boo.
Corset is held in place by my arms, hence the weird shape (not to mention it makes me look huge O.o)
This dress is kind of an 'emergency solution' since I haven't had a chance to create my skirt and sleeves yet for this costume. Figured, hey it works, before the wings fall apart completely, lets take a picture

They're made of fabric, glued around a straw that I slid around sticks that are on the frame

I got a lot of help from Bushitaka here on DA. He built giant wings too, so I suggest looking at his gallery and scraps

The wings in this picture were taken apart again, so they don't open and close
But the new version ( fav.me/d803xrr ) opens and closes with a little bolt/pin at the upper joint of the wings. I can push up and out to open then, and pull back in and down to close them.

I don't take wing commissions on articulated ones, I might consider smaller, non-articulated wing commissions.

How well did the wings move with the feathers? I've heard that it's tricky to get them layered just right so they don't bunch up or break as the wings bend

Well, with these wings that's exactly what happened, which is why I took them apart again. I'm currently rebuilding them, and so far it's going pretty ok.

Ah, that's what I was afraid of. Because I have to make two sets of these (if not four) for Gabriel and Castiel in two years and I'm trying to find the best way to feather them with this framework without having the risk of them breaking or bending from being folded up.

I know that feeling, I used to work all my evening and weekends and holidays, so a single costume could take me half a year. Now I still haven't found a job after graduating and costumes go so fast

I completely understand costumes taking a while. I've not had to do any that are too hard yet, but this summer is going to be full of it. I'm making Toph's wig (ATLA), Maka's 6.5' tall scythe (Soul Eater) and two sets of wings for Gabriel and Castiel for 2015...lots of work cut out for me. But thanks for the tip. I'll definitely take my time and do lots of trial and error with the feathers.

Well, I got the frame as part of a trade, so I can't make a tutorial for that. And I'm not allowed to make one for the feathers, but you can have a look at =Sunnybrook1 for that, she did make one

Well, these I made and then tore them apart again because the feathers started to break. I reused the frame for the V2 WorkInProgress I updated.
I had someone help me as well, and I did a lot of research and trial and error on experiments.

Lots of fabric... lots of glue... and lots of drinking straws... For the feathers that is.
As for the frame, I think it's aluminium but I didn't make that myself, I got it as part of a trade, so I can't say for sure.

WOW dit ziet er echt super gaaf uit! Ik ben nieuwschierig, waar heb je die veren uit gemaakt? Ik las iets van twee lagen zijde met daartussen een laag maar wat is daar de nederlandse naam van?

De buitenste lagen zijn voeringstof, maar lang niet alle voeringstof werkt, ben ik achter gekomen.
Er tussenin zit een soort polyester mat dat wordt gebruikt voor beschadigde muren. Ik weet niet meer hoe het allemaal heet, ik heb het meer dan 2 jaar geleden allemaal gekocht.

Probably could, bat wings are much easier and quicker to make since they don't require all the individual feathers.

The feathers are glued in a sort of sandwich, the outer layers are fake silk lining, with a core of polyester webbing to give it some rigidity. There's long drinking straws in them so I can slide them onto the sticks that are attached to the frame. (you can see that in some of the other pictures)

I took these wings apart again, as most of the feathers were damaged, and I only took this picture of them, so sadly, no. I'm redoing these wings though, so I should have some pics of them open and closed in about 2,5 months.

Mja, dat was omdat ik ondertussen aardig kram in mijn armen begon te krijgen van het vastklemmen van dat corset
En de jurk was placeholder voor het echte kostuum.
Trouwens was meer dan de helft van de veren echt kapot toen ik ze eraf haalde, is maar goed ook dat ik er niet mee naar de EFF ben gegaan want ze hadden niet eens het eerste uur overleefd

Ze waren helemaal opgefrommeld door het in en uitvouwen van de vleugels, het stuk om de rietjes was het enige dat nog wel heel was, vreemd genoeg.
Komt gewoon omdat ze te smal zijn en daarom niet ver genoeg over elkaar vallen. Ik heb ondertussen de vorm en breedte aangepast voor mijn nieuwe ontwerp, nu blijven ze niet meer achter elkaar haken enzo...
Jammer dat ik nog geen tijd heb om de mallen te komen halen, volgende week al een week vrij. Ik wil zo graag weer beginnen met plakken enzo, dan kan ik ze afmaken!

They look great! (although there's a gap in one. my little black wings lost some feathers on the EFF, and it looked terrible 
I love the leatherwork although it's not the shape you want yet.
